Steelers' Cameron Offers Revealing Commentary On The Potential QB Change Ahead Of Week 7

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been living with a quarterback dilemma through their first six weeks. After intended starter Russell Wilson suffered a calf injury ahead of training camp, Justin Fields was able to step up and lead the team. Fields has taken the Steelers to 4-2 and played better than many expected. However, the what-ifs have been hanging over the team the entire time, and Head Coach Mike Tomlin recently announced they would likely be putting those to rest.

In his weekly press conference, Tomlin told the media that for the first time this season, Wilson would be taking first-team reps to prepare for the New York Jets in Week 7. He did not definitively say that Wilson would start over Fields, but most agree it is leaning toward this.

Cameron Heyward, the long-time captain and the oldest player on the defense, recently discussed the potential quarterback switch on his podcast Not Just Football with Cam Heyward. His co-host, Hayden Walsh, pointed out that Fields had played well and asked Heyward if he was surprised by the announcement that came out shortly before they filmed the episode.

"Well, I just heard about it not too long ago," admitted Heyward. "I don't know; no one said anything to us, but we ride with both quarterbacks. We think both of them can have success, it's not a shot at either. I think when you look at these two guys, we're in here to win, and they're doing that. I don't know what's going on, I'm not going to try and predict or be in somebody's mind of what they think, but as a player on this team, I will make sure that both guys are supported, and I will make sure that we give each of these quarterbacks a chance to win each of these games. That's only right. No matter who's in there, we got a chance, so we will see what happens on Sunday. But Russ and Justin, you know we're going to support."

Walsh admitted he found the switch a bit shocking. After all, Fields' ability to use his athleticism was a major catalyst for the win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 6. Many feel the older Wilson lacks this ability. That could be especially important given how banged up and underperforming the offensive line has been. Fields has completed 106 passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception in six games. He has added 231 yards with his legs and five more touchdowns.

Heyward's diplomacy is not surprising. His teammates have voted him captain for nine seasons for a reason. In the past, Heyward has been one of the veteran players who helped mediate issues among other members of the team. He is also an inspirational leader. According to superstar edge rusher, T.J. Watt, when the defense allowed the Raiders to drive down and score on their first series, it was Heyward who lit a fire under the rest of the team.

Is Steelers' Mike Tomlin Talking Out Of Both Sides Of His Mouth?

When he announced his decision this week, many analysts were confused by Tomlin's likely switch away from Fields. This is in spite of the fact that Wilson's calf injury has lingered much longer than anyone expected.

Many in the media say that Tomlin talks out of both sides of his mouth when speaking to the press. He has told them all along that numbers don't matter, letters do, meaning its about a W and not a score. Fields had provided those Ws, as few believed the Steelers would be tied for first in the AFC North through six weeks.

There have been rumors that there are those inside the organization who are frustrated with the potential change and believe that the team should stick with Fields. However, it is also true that winning is the priority, so if Wilson is leading the team to more comfortable victories, that loyalty could easily shift.
