The Pittsburgh Steelers made bold moves in the 2024 offseason, acquiring veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and young talent Justin Fields. The plan was always for Wilson to take the reins as the starting quarterback, and he was named the starter ahead of the first game. However, a calf injury sidelined Wilson for the first six games, forcing the Steelers to rely on Fields. Now, with Wilson fully recovered, speculation is swirling that he will make his regular season Pittsburgh debut against the New York Jets on Sunday night.

Steelers' Russell Wilson talks to Justin Fields during a game.

While most believe Wilson will return as the starter, Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin added some mystery by refusing to confirm the decision.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Tomlin kept everyone guessing about who will lead the team on Sunday, declining to reveal whether Wilson or Fields will take the first snap. This secrecy has only fueled excitement and anticipation ahead of the prime time showdown.

"I am [ready to name a starter], but I am just going to keep that in house," Tomlin said. "I thought he [Russell Wilson] was sharp. I thought Justin was sharp as well. I thought we had a highly productive week from both guys and as that unit as a whole."

Tomlin made it clear he was impressed with both quarterbacks during practice leading up to the Week 7 game. However, he has no intention of revealing the starter to the media. By keeping this under wraps, Tomlin is likely aiming to keep the Jets' defense on their toes, making it tougher for them to prepare for either Wilson or Fields.

Preparing for Wilson and Fields presents vastly different challenges for opposing defenses. Fields, one of the league's best running quarterbacks, has showcased his mobility through six games, consistently picking up crucial first downs and adding a dynamic element to the Steelers' offense.

His dual-threat ability has accounted for 10 touchdowns—five passing and five rushing—providing a spark the Steelers haven’t had in years. Fields’ versatility forces defenses to stay on their toes, making it a nightmare to contain him.

Steelers' George Pickens Leaks The Starting QB

Despite Tomlin’s efforts to keep the starting quarterback under wraps, likely to complicate the Jets' game planning, star wide receiver George Pickens may have unintentionally let the secret slip. Speaking to the media on Friday, Pickens hinted that Wilson would get the start.

If true, it will mark the first time Steelers fans see the 35-year-old, nine-time Pro Bowler in action. Wilson, who won a Super Bowl in his prime, still has the leadership and talent that Tomlin values.

While the decision isn’t a reflection of what Fields hasn’t done, it’s clear the Steelers are eager to see what Wilson can bring to the passing game. Tomlin, like many, is curious to find out how much Wilson still has left in the tank and believes he can lead the team to wins in 2024.
