Steelers Still Have Attractive Free Agent Available To Boost Receiving Corps Even More

Who says that the Pittsburgh Steelers have to be done bolstering the wide receiving corps simply because General Manager Omar Khan traded for Mike Williams? While the unit certainly got better, there's no reason why the team shouldn't continue to explore options to bring in more weapons for Russell Wilson. Any veteran quarterback appreciates having as many reliable pass-catchers as possible, and it's not out of the realm of possibility for the organization to make another external move for help. With the trade deadline passing, this would have to be a free-agent signing, and an extremely intriguing name remains available.

The addition of Williams significantly helps an offense that is finding its identity midway through the season. The Steelers now have two deep threats in George Pickens and Williams, both of whom have the abilities to go vertical and over defenders to make big catches. Over the middle of the field, Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin III have shown flashes, but a shifty slot receiver being brought in would potentially be an upgrade over them, and certainly over Scotty Miller.

Hunter Renfrow is still sitting at home and waiting for an opportunity to join a contender down the stretch. Given all of the wide receiver-needy teams throughout the league, it is quite surprising that he has not found a new organization to play for just yet. It's possible that he is waiting for the perfect fit, and that could end up being in the Steel City.

Given how the Steelers traditionally operate, it's unlikely, but not impossible, that the front office would reach out to Renfrow's team unless an injury occurs. That's why it will be interesting to see if something pops up with one of the borderline wideouts. Renfrow is no slouch of a wide receiver, and has plenty of veteran experience to bring into a locker room making a push to the postseason.

Former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow makes a move on a defender in a professional football contest against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Roman Wilson experiment has gone terribly for the Steelers and if the franchise truly wants to be looked at as a contender, an addition of a guy like Renfrow could only lead to more speculation that Pittsburgh has an offense that can do some damage. The team will certainly stay patient with Williams and see if he is the final missing piece to the puzzle, but signing Renfrow for next to nothing may be both a strategic and wise move by Khan.

The veteran receiver will likely need time to ramp and if he has to sit down on the practice squad for a couple of weeks, it can't hurt anybody involved. The interesting part about this is that Renfrow has virtually disappeared from the NFL landscape since being cut by the Las Vegas Raiders. It's possible that organizations across the league know something about Renfrow that may not be public knowledge.

With that said, if he is healthy and ready to play, it won't be surprising to see his name pop up on a roster of a contending team in November or December. He doesn't have to take someone's job in Pittsburgh right away, but would come in as a guy that once had a season with 103 catches, 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. That's nearly impossible to pass up for the veteran minimum when a team has eyes on a Super Bowl appearance.

Steelers Have Not Been Connected To Renfrow Since Wideout Became A Free Agent

As a team desperate for wide receiver help, it's rather telling that Pittsburgh has never been involved in legitimate rumors surrounding Renfrow. Interestingly enough, not many franchises have been in general.

Khan inquiring about Renfrow's services may only come if one of the slot receivers goes down with an injury, but he is a guy to keep an eye on down the stretch. If he is in playing shape and wants to get out on a field sooner rather than later, the Steelers are still a team to watch, despite the acquisition of Williams.
