The Pittsburgh Steelers are known to have the best fans in not just the NFL but all of sports. Time after time, Steeler Nation travels to away stadiums and takes them over, turning rival fields into seas of black and gold. It’s rare for the Steelers to feel like they’re on the road, as their passionate fan base follows them from coast to coast and cheers with unmatched energy.

One of the defining aspects of this loyal culture is the legendary tailgating scene that unites fans before kickoff. These gatherings bring people together in celebration, with food, games, and music filling the air as fans prepare for the game ahead. Among these tailgates, the Terrible Tailgate stands out as one of the most beloved, providing an ultimate game-day experience for six years. Known for its electric atmosphere and Steelers pride, it has become a must-visit for fans traveling to Pittsburgh.

Recently, however, the Terrible Tailgate, co-hosted by SteelerNation Owner Justin McGonigle and tailgate founder Kevin Adams received surprising news from ALCO Parking: they would no longer be allowed to host in the Red Lot 5A, starting immediately. The sudden decision has left fans disappointed and concerned, as many had come to see this location as a staple of their game-day rituals.

The tailgate has been moved and will go on just in a new location: Cardello Electric Building located on 701 North Point Drive. McGonigle explained the shock when he found out the tailgate was being forced out of the Red Lot 5A and all Alco lots.

"We were very surprised because we haven't had one single issue all season," McGonigle said. "There were no issues with the parking attendants. I spoke to all of them throughout the tailgate at each event this year to make sure everything was good from their end."

The Terrible Tailgate Facebook page was contacted at three in the morning by the manager of the Red Lot 5a.

McGonigle provided further insight into why ALCO is forcing them out of the lot.

"We're unsure why it suddenly has become a problem," McGonigle said. "We were told there were issues with there being too many people. The tailgate has grown, but it isn't any larger than the past year. The Steelers had three night games in a row and with night games brings way more people overall to the North Shore to tailgate. People aren't getting up at 8am, but they will show up at 3pm. Alco has done everything they can to push people from tailgating. They want you to show up, pay your $50 and go spend your money inside the stadium."

The unfortunate reality is that big corporations often prioritize their bottom line, and it seems that’s exactly what happened with the recent decision to force tailgates out of parking lots.

The game-day experience thrives on tailgates, where excitement builds before fans even step into the stadium. Ultimately, it appears this move is about encouraging fans to spend more inside the stadium. By making tailgating more difficult, fans are more likely to enter earlier, leading to higher spending on concessions. Adams took to social media to share his thoughts on the situation, offering a personal perspective on the challenging turn of events.

Steelers' Terrible Tailgate Moves To A New Location

Gameday culture in Pittsburgh is unlike any other, and Adams is concerned that ALCO’s decision could threaten the unique atmosphere he’s spent the last six years building. While the tailgate may be moving, it’s far from over.

Now you can find the Terrible Tailgate at 334 Federal Street in the Federal Street Canal parking lot.
