The Pittsburgh Steelers are pretty fortunate to have two capable starting quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Fields began the season strong, leading the team to a 4-2 record in his first six starts. However, Mike Tomlin made the controversial decision to bench Fields in favor of Wilson, who has since gone 4-0 as a starter. Now sitting at 8-2 after a thrilling win over the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers are reaping the benefits of their quarterback depth.

Although Fields saw limited action against the Ravens, playing just three snaps and coming up short on a would be first down after sliding too early, his influence on the game was undeniable. Fields made his mark during the week of preparation, helping the Steelers' defense simulate Lamar Jackson’s unique play style. His contributions in practice were instrumental in crafting a game plan that effectively neutralized Baltimore’s high-powered offense.

When Tomlin addressed the media on Monday, he didn’t shy away from acknowledging Fields' role in the win. He praised the mobile quarterback for giving the defense a realistic look at what to expect from Jackson, which helped them slow down the Ravens high powered offensive attack. While Wilson continues to lead the offense, Fields’ teamwork and preparation have proven invaluable in ensuring Pittsburgh’s success on both sides of the ball.

"I thought they had a good week's work," Tomlin said. "I thought they were wired in. I thought Justin really challenged them. They had a good challenge in terms of prep. In terms of utilizing Justin’s skill set to represent that. It’s probably more satisfaction than anything else."

Jackson entered the game as one of the NFL's most productive quarterbacks, leading a Ravens offense that had been putting up video game-like numbers. However, the Steelers' elite defense brought them back to reality. Jackson was limited to completing just 16 of 33 passes for 207 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception.

While Derrick Henry managed a solid performance with 13 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown, Pittsburgh’s defense largely contained the Ravens' usually dominant rushing attack.

Slowing down Baltimore's explosive offense was no small feat, but the Steelers’ defense rose to the challenge. Tomlin’s acknowledgment of Fields during his Monday presser highlighted an overlooked key to their success.

Fields played a critical role in preparing the defense, replicating Jackson’s unique style during practice and helping refine their game plan.

Steelers' Justin Fields Continues To Make His Mark In Pittsburgh

Fields’ unselfishness and professionalism continue to stand out, even in the midst of Pittsburgh's awkward quarterback dynamics. Despite being benched earlier in the season, he has remained a consummate teammate and an extraordinary leader. His contributions off the field are a testament to his character and a big reason why the Steelers are thriving at 8-2. The entire team is bought in and playing for the name on the front of the jersey and not the one on the back.

Many Steelers fans have been eager to see special packages designed for Fields, knowing the dynamic threat he brings as a runner. Despite hints from the coaching staff, the first three games with Wilson at quarterback didn’t feature any such plays. However, in the fourth game, Tomlin and Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith finally gave Fields his opportunity.

According to Tomlin, Fields had been nursing a hamstring injury, which delayed their plans to integrate him into the offense. When his chance came, Fields contributed to getting a first down, helping the Steelers secure a critical divisional win—though his early slide on a play nearly jeopardized that effort. Even so, his presence was impactful in crucial moments.

Fields may no longer be the starting quarterback, but his contributions go beyond stats or starting snaps. Whether preparing the defense in practice or stepping in for creative offensive plays, Fields remains an integral part of the Steelers’ success this season.
