Steelers Need To Somehow Orchestrate A Critical Reunion To Help Turn The Offense Around In 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2024 season was a rollercoaster. At one point, the team seemed to be a contender in the AFC, and then everything came crashing down throughout the final five games, which included a playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens. There are several areas that need to be addressed throughout the 2025 offseason, but one of the more pressing issues remaining is a revamped offensive line that has yet to find anywhere close to its ceiling. An injury to Troy Fautanu threw a wrench into things before the season began, but overall, there needs to be some serious adjustments by the group, and it might start with coaching.

Pat Meyer has been with the Steelers' organization since the 2022 campaign. Several draft picks have been utilized to improve the unit, but Pittsburgh quarterbacks were sacked nearly three times per game in 2024, which was almost at the very bottom of the league. On top of that, the rushing attack never got going consistently, and this led to several failed attempts to use play-action, something that Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith loves to call.

Just about a year ago, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was asked about the organization reuniting with offensive line guru Mike Munchak, and the reporter vehemently shut down the idea on WDVE 102.5.

"No," Dulac said. "They're set with where they are with Pat Meyer. I will tell you that Mike Munchak was a possibility as coming back as a line coach, but the Steelers really like Pat Meyer. He's done a great job with their run game."

That was then, and this is now. It is hard to believe that Meyer will survive firings if Pittsburgh really does decide to shake things up. It's impossible not to make changes after the collapse that the team had. With Munchak being a free agent, there is no time like the present to give him a call and ask about his interest in returning.

He did say in 2024 that he'd be open to a legitimate coaching role once again if the opportunity made sense, which, at the time, was him potentially going back to be on the Tennessee Titans' coaching staff. That perfect situation in 2025 could absolutely be him coming back to the Steel City to help get the offensive line back to what it was when he was in charge from 2014-2018.

There are few things more necessary in the NFL to win consistently than a competent and consistent offensive line. The Steelers have not been able to put out the perfect product on the field for years. When Munchak was leading the group, it was one of the league's most efficient. The unit is young enough that Munchak could certainly come in and make a difference almost immediately. It's time for some serious change in the Steel City.

Munchak currently works as a consultant for the Los Angeles Rams. He originally left Pittsburgh to go to the West Coast due to family being out there, but has been vocal lately about not being landlocked to that part of the country. The Rams have a stout offensive line and while Munchak is not in charge of it, fans can count on the fact that he has been involved with offensive line coach Ryan Wendell.

The Steelers need to shake up a lot of things if the offense wants to finally get out of the deep hole that it has dug itself. Quarterback is the biggest question mark, but the group as a whole may have had a little more success in 2024 if the line was more consistent.

Steelers Need To Change Up Approach When It Comes To Coaching Staff

Head Coach Mike Tomlin has a lot of power within Pittsburgh's building. This is no surprise given the leader's incredible tenure with the organization. It's time, however, for Art Rooney II to open up his checkbook and be willing to bring in an elite staff that can turn around a struggling offense, and defense too. It's possible Pittsburgh is waiting for Los Angeles to lose so Meyer can then be fired and a phone call be put into Munchak.
