Steelers Fail To Keep Up With The Rest Of The League In This Area Of Improvement

Pittsburgh Steelers fans are seeking for changes this offseason after an embarrassing Wild Card Round loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Head Coach Mike Tomlin and the team failed to break their playoff losing streak, leaving Steeler Nation frustrated. The Steelers aren't known to make major changes on its coaching staff often and this offseason doesn't seem any different. There may be a few changes here and there, but nothing that'll likely answer the problems Pittsburgh faced in its five-game losing streak to end the season.

Another problem the Steelers have in general is being "old school." They aren't known as an organization to keep up with the latest trends and ideas in the NFL. Pittsburgh has been a successful franchise, but lately fans have questioned if the old school way is keeping the team back from winning and competing with the top teams in the AFC.

One of these trends is filling up a coaching staff with coordinators and specialists to help with specific needs on a team. Steelers beat writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Brian Batko talked about this issue on 93.7 The Fan Tuesday evening and if Pittsburgh was looking into this at all.

"At this point, the increased staffing has been pretty slow to happen," Batko said. "I mean, they have added a few here and there I guess, but they continue to lag behind the rest of the league... I think the Steelers have been somewhat resistant to those kind of positions and you know there are other on-the-field coaches too who work with the players, like the Ravens have a pass rush specialist. You see these passing game coordinators, run game coordinators..."

Batko went into what the Steelers aren't doing like others in the league and it could lead back to some of their problems. Looking at the coaching roster of the Steelers and Ravens, there's a clear contrast in them. The Ravens have more specific roles for certain areas on the field, unlike the Steelers.

Tomlin isn't known for his head coaching tree and hasn't hired the best coordinators lately. Whether it's a front office decision or a Tomlin decision to not expand the coaching staff, that seriously needs to be reevaluated.

Batko gave some more insight to this issue, stating the Buffalo Bills even have their own nickel coordinator on their staff. Running a football team is a difficult task, but adding more assistants and coordinators and dividing up the labor could lead to more production from different parts of the team.

There has been no indication if the Steelers will follow this route as they like to stick with what they have, the best example being three head coaches in the past 56 years. In today's world, fans in Pittsburgh are ready for something new. Changes need to happen, whether it's firing someone, adding onto the staff, or mixing up the roster. If the team doesn't do much of that, it'll be a long 2025 season for everyone.

Steelers Likely Not To Make Major Coaching Changes This Offseason

A name under fire on the Steelers' coaching staff after the season ended was Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin. The defense had a huge collapse at the end of the season and couldn't help the team in their five-game losing streak. Although the offense struggled, the defensive unit is supposed to be the strongest aspect of the team and help win games.

The Steelers gave up 137 points during that span and let opposing offenses go up and down the field on them. Fans called out Tomlin, but also Austin as he'd be the one to likely get fired instead of Tomlin, who is known to take part in the defensive decisions. However, Adam Schefter gave some insight into this matter and disappointed Steelers fans when he said there likely wouldn't be any major changes to come.

Do you think the Steelers lack in this aspect with adding more to their coaching staff? Let us know in the comments!
