The Pittsburgh Steelers have some big decisions to make at the quarterback spot in the 2025 offseason. Of course, both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are in need of new deals to keep them in Pittsburgh. It seemed likely the Steelers were going to be giving Wilson a new deal as both sides were riding high when the team was doing well. However, after the five-game collapse to finish the 2024 season, there are more questions than answers at this point.

The struggles that plagued Wilson and the Steelers' offense during that stretch have left many wondering about his future with the team. Despite early optimism, the late-season slump exposed some serious flaws that might have changed the front office's stance.

With both Wilson and Fields needing new contracts, Pittsburgh's decision-making becomes even more complicated as the team looks to stabilize the quarterback position for the long-term future. Wilson joined The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday and provided some new insight into his future in the Steel City.

"Yes, we have started to talk a little bit, obviously, and we had our meetings and everything else," Wilson said. "We're just getting into it."

While he didn’t give any definitive answers, Wilson hinted at his desire to stay with the Steelers and continue working toward a championship. However, the 2025 offseason promises to be a critical one as both Wilson and Fields will be weighing their options, and the Steelers will have to carefully navigate these decisions to avoid further uncertainty.

Wilson has been clear about his commitment to Pittsburgh from day one. Upon arriving in the Steel City, his first stop was the Steelers Pro Shop, where he eagerly spent his own money on team gear. Veteran defensive leader Cam Heyward noticed and playfully pointed out to Wilson that they get free gear from the team. But Wilson was so excited to be part of the Steelers that he couldn’t wait—his early purchase was a clear sign of how invested he was in Pittsburgh.

Initially, Fields showed promise, leading the offense to a solid 4-2 record. But then, Mike Tomlin made the controversial decision to bench Fields in favor of a healthy Wilson. The move initially seemed like a stroke of genius, as the offense took off to levels the team hadn’t seen in years. Wilson's leadership seemed to spark something special in the Steelers' attack.

Steelers Have A Hard Choice To Make At QB In 2025

However, the five straight losses to finish the season have shifted the narrative surrounding Wilson’s future. While Wilson remains confident he’ll be back in 2025, some speculation suggests the Steelers might look to go in a younger direction.

The most exciting prospect? The 25-year-old Fields, who has immense untapped potential. If Fields can finally reach his ceiling, his future in Pittsburgh could be far brighter than Wilson's at 36. The Steelers could also take a swing at quarterback in the draft and have Fields be the starter. There are several options Pittsburgh could look into regarding the future of the quarterback position.

One of the most surprising stories of the 2025 offseason came from Mark Kaboly, who reported that Arthur Smith and Wilson had a difficult working relationship. Kaboly suggested that the two didn’t see eye to eye, but some individuals within the organization have disputed this claim, leaving the matter unclear.

At times, there was speculation that Smith might have felt more confident about the Steelers' chances with Fields rather than Wilson. This adds a new layer of intrigue as the Steelers face major decisions ahead, not only regarding their quarterback situation but also their coaching staff. Fans will be watching closely to see where these conversations lead with Wilson and Fields, knowing that no matter the outcome, it’s likely to spark frustration among the fan base.
