The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of questions to answer about their roster for the 2025 season. It starts at the most important position in all of football. The quarterback spot is something the Steelers desperately need to figure out before they truly can start competing for Super Bowls again. Russell Wilson lost his grip on his return to the Steel City when he played a part in losing five straight games to finish off the season. Justin Fields is an exciting choice, but still many Steelers fans aren't convinced he's the future either.

With uncertainty surrounding both Wilson and Fields, the Steelers' front office might be looking at alternatives. As they prepare for the future, there's no denying that the quarterback position remains the most crucial area that needs fixing. It’s clear the Steelers need to make a strong decision soon if they’re to become Super Bowl contenders again. The pressure to find a solution only grows as each season passes, and a potential shake-up in the quarterback room could be on the horizon.
Former NFL Network host Dave Dameshek posited a crazy idea that may not be so wild after all on Wednesday during an episode of his podcast. Dameshek stated that it's not that crazy to think the Steelers, who really like Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward a lot, could trade a ton to move up to first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft to select him. If the Steelers are truly sold on Ward’s potential, this kind of bold move could be the start of a new era under center in Pittsburgh.
"To me, I think and maybe I am looking for things to be true that aren’t actually true," Dameshek said. "I know they like Cam Ward. I think maybe that’s the move and I think that you go all the way up. The jive about that’s not what the Steelers do. Well obviously they do do these things now that they didn’t do 25 years ago."
At first glance, it may seem like Dameshek is making a wild, outlandish statement. But if you really think about it, it’s not as crazy as it sounds. The Tennessee Titans don’t appear fully committed to Ward and could be open to a substantial package deal that would allow the Steelers to move up to their spot and select him.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan picks up the phone in the team's war room during the 2023 NFL Draft weekend.
General Manager Omar Khan has built a reputation for being aggressive, and this could be the kind of bold move he’s known for.
"They absolutely, it’s reasonable to think that they would trade all the way up to number one," Dameshek said. "Tennessee wants to get multiple players. This is the time to do it."
In theory, such a move would be a major shift and a significant gamble for the Steelers. However, if the organization is truly serious about evolving and turning the page to a new chapter, this could be the kind of statement that signals change. It would show the fanbase that the Steelers are ready to take the necessary risks to build a championship-caliber team.
Steelers' Omar Khan Could Send A Big Message To The Fan Base In The 2025 NFL Draft
This kind of move would send a clear message: the Steelers aren’t afraid to make the big decisions needed to secure a future at quarterback. If they can execute it, it would demonstrate their commitment to not just compete, but to win at the highest level. The choice to trade away a ton for Ward would surely be met with a lot of critique. However, it may just be what the Steelers and Khan need to do to turn the momentum back in the favor of the future.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike Tomlin sit in the franchise's draft room as they anxiously watch the board in 2023.
Khan has made it clear that he prefers to take an aggressive approach in the draft, especially when it comes to trading up for a player he believes is truly worth it. With change clearly needed, the idea of trading a significant package of assets for the number one overall pick becomes a very real possibility. Whether this move is popular or not will ultimately be up to the fanbase to decide, but it would undoubtedly be a bold statement about the team’s commitment to securing their future quarterback.
