Adam Schefter Revealing Steelers' Quarterback Wish List For 2025 And Where Aaron Rodgers Ranks On It

The Pittsburgh Steelers have some tough decisions to make during the 2025 offseason. Of course, the most important one is the quarterback position, as they are in the same situation they were in one year ago: no clear-cut answer to the issue. Because of their ability to at least be competitive and make the playoffs year in and year out, they have been linked to almost every quarterback that may or may not be available. At this point, it seems like the Steelers have first choice, then the others will make their choice once Pittsburgh is no longer an option.

While appearing on ESPN's Unsportsmanlike, Adam Schefter was asked about Aaron Rodgers' potential fit in Pittsburgh. While it's possible that the Steelers go after the former Super Bowl champion, Schefter sees that fit as more of a last resort.

"Let's say that Pittsburgh is the obvious landing spot in our hypothetical conversation about Aaron Rodgers," said Schefter. "So Pittsburgh is willing to not discuss a deal with Russell Wilson or Justin Fields? It's not going to check on Matthew Stafford if the Rams decide they're going to suddenly trade Matthew Stafford? It's not going to look into any other quarterback that's a free agent either: Sam Darnold, or whoever it may be? It's not going to consider any of those?"

Rodgers' time with the New York Jets left fans wondering if he has what it takes to lead a team anymore. It doesn't help that he was seen as a control freak, and it helps even less that a current Steeler already voiced his disapproval of the potential marriage. There are so many other options that the team could try first.

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers stands in front of the media during his introductory press conference in May of 2023 after being traded to the organization.

The Steelers already announced their desire to re-sign either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. Both seem like upgrades over the 41-year-old, as Wilson gives off more of a positive vibe and Fields has more upside and might be the humblest team player in the NFL. Why go out and get a guy with problems when you can keep your own better options?

If they truly want an upgrade, then why would they not look towards Matthew Stafford? Sure, a potential trade would be somewhat expensive in terms of cap hit and assets traded away, but sometimes, you need to pay up to get what you want. Everyone would most likely feel better about giving up a couple second-round picks for him than giving Rodgers $10 million.

The quarterback class in free agency is relatively weak. Even then, Schefter is right about Rodgers not making sense as the first call. Guys like Sam Darnold and Mac Jones are much younger with a lot more upside, and neither of them are problems in the locker room. They can do a lot better in the open market than Rodgers and his questionable character.

Steelers Signing Rodgers Is An Indictment On Organization

Schefter continues on, saying that anything is possible, but there's a long way to go before the Steelers truly consider Rodgers as an option.

"To me, I could see Pittsburgh making some sense, but I don't think Pittsburgh's starting their search with Aaron Rodgers..." said Schefter. "Could it wind up on Aaron Rodgers eventually? Yes, but I think there's steps that need to be taken before you can get there."

Those steps to get Rodgers would involve them missing out on numerous quarterbacks. If Wilson, Fields, Stafford, Darnold, and more players say no to Pittsburgh, there will be cause for concern. It doesn't matter what the issue would be; something drastic would need to change if Option #5 starts for a supposed proud organization like the Steelers.
