The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in an intriguing situation at wide receiver. After making the bold yet strategic decision to trade Diontae Johnson, they entered the 2024 season with a noticeably weaker receiving corps. General Manager Omar Khan made a strong push to acquire star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers, aggressively working to get a deal done. Reports indicated that the trade was close to happening, but ultimately, nothing materialized, leaving the Steelers’ wide receiver room lacking firepower.

Fortunately, George Pickens provided a much-needed spark, helping keep the Steelers' passing game afloat. However, it quickly became evident that he needed more support—a reliable, complementary wide receiver to take pressure off him. As a result, Pittsburgh is widely expected to make significant moves at the position, whether through free agency, the draft, or even a blockbuster trade.

One name that has recently gained traction in trade speculation is Los Angeles Rams star wide receiver Cooper Kupp. While Kupp is getting older, he remains one of the league’s most elite receivers when healthy. His ability to create separation, make contested catches, and serve as a reliable target would bring immediate value to the Steelers’ offense.

During a segment of Get Up on Tuesday, former NFL quarterback and current analyst Tim Hasselbeck explained why he believes Kupp would be a perfect fit in Pittsburgh. His insights have fueled speculation about whether the Steelers could make a serious move for the veteran wideout. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on Pittsburgh’s next steps in addressing their wide receiver situation.

"I'm gonna say the Pittsburgh Steelers, in part because they've indicated what they're going to do at quarterback," Hasselbeck said. "Maybe isn't going to be a true difference maker there. So, supporting that quarterback, obviously they've got Pickens outside, good talent, but how about an inside receiver, kind of bring some maturity, some professionalism, and also some production to that offense."

The biggest criticism of Pickens has been his occasional lack of composure. However, there’s no denying his immense talent on the field. When focused and locked in, he is an elite wide receiver with the potential to become one of the best in the NFL. Unfortunately, the Steelers’ struggling offensive system has only added to his frustrations, which have played out publicly far too often.

This has even led some fans to suggest trading him—a shocking idea, considering he’s a 24-year-old star on a team that desperately needs receiver help. Yet, it speaks volumes about how some view Pickens, particularly his emotional reactions. Now, as he enters the final season of his rookie contract, he’s set to become a free agent after the 2025 season.

To fairly evaluate both his talent and temperament, the Steelers must ensure their offense is efficient and well-structured. With a legitimate system in place, they can determine whether his frustrations are a product of poor team play or a deeper issue. If Pittsburgh gets it right, Pickens has all the tools to be a true franchise cornerstone.

It’s difficult to judge Pickens too harshly for his outbursts. More often than not, his frustrations stem from his desire to win and his belief that he can help Pittsburgh secure victories. When he feels he hasn’t been given the opportunity to do so, and the team loses as a result, that’s when the problems arise.

Steelers Adding Cooper Kupp Would Be Very Helpful For Several Reasons

Adding Kupp to the Steelers would address several key needs. For one, Kupp could serve as a mentor and veteran leader to Pickens, helping him grow both on and off the field. Additionally, Kupp would be an ideal complementary piece to Pickens’ skill set. While Pickens could dominate on the outside, Kupp’s ability to excel in the slot would add a new dimension to Pittsburgh’s offense—something that’s been sorely lacking.

As the offseason progresses, Steeler Nation will continue to keep a close eye on Kupp’s situation, hoping that Khan can strike a deal that bolsters their offense. If the Steelers truly want to end their playoff drought during the 2025 season. They will need to be active in free agency on the offensive side of the football.
