Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Omar Khan has been nothing short of a superhero early in his tenure with the franchise. His strategic moves and decisive leadership helped the team navigate through difficult roster decisions, and his sharp eye for talent brought in key additions that were met with widespread praise.

However, recently, Khan has found himself facing a wave of criticism, particularly after failing to land wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Despite reports that the Steelers were reportedly on the verge of completing a massive trade with the San Francisco 49ers to bring Aiyuk into the fold, the deal never materialized. This missed opportunity, coupled with the team's ongoing struggles, has caused some members of the fan base to turn on Khan.
This scenario highlights just how difficult it is to keep an entire fan base happy in the NFL. The nature of the league is relentless; it's a "what have you done for me lately" environment, and that’s exactly what Khan is now experiencing. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season, and that long playoff drought has created mounting pressure on Khan that he doesn’t necessarily deserve. While the Steelers have made some notable moves in recent seasons, the inability to get over that postseason hump continues to hang over the team like a dark cloud.
The frustration is palpable within Steeler Nation, and now, more than ever, Khan's every move or lack of action will likely be scrutinized. Every trade, every draft pick, and every signing is subject to immediate, intense criticism. Fans are clamoring for a return to playoff glory, and any perceived misstep by Khan only fuels their discontent.
When insider Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette held his recent chat with fans, the frustration came to a head. One fan questioned whether Khan was truly cut out for the role of a legitimate general manager, and the backlash was swift.
"Last I checked, he's the same guy who traded Chase Claypool for the 32nd overall pick in 2023, maneuvered around the draft board to land players the Steelers were high on and acquired Justin Fields for a 6th-round pick," Batko said to the fan. "I'm not gonna say he's been perfect, but let's not act like he hasn't made his share of shrewd moves. Plus, it's just a cool nickname [The Khan Artist]."
Batko, however, wasted no time in delivering a much-needed reality check. He reminded fans of Khan’s track record and the difficult position he has been in. The GM inherited a team in transition, with salary cap constraints and several holes to fill. Yet, Khan's ability to navigate these challenges while consistently improving the roster should not be overlooked. Not every move can be a home run, and while Aiyuk was a coveted target, missing out on him doesn’t invalidate Khan's broader vision for the team.

This reality check underscores a bigger issue: the impatience that has taken hold of Steelers fans. They are used to a high standard of success, and the current period of mediocrity has shaken their confidence. Khan's moves are designed to build a team that can compete for championships in the long run, but such efforts require time and consistency. The pressure on him to deliver immediate results is unfair when considering the complexity of the challenges he faces.
Moreover, it’s important to note that Khan has made some major moves that have paid off. His acquisition of key players in free agency and his draft selections, including the addition of talented rookies, have provided the team with much-needed depth. The Steelers' defense remains one of the most formidable in the league, and Khan’s work to shore up the offense cannot be understated. The road to success isn't always linear, and it's not as simple as acquiring one player like Aiyuk to fix the team’s issues.
Steelers' Omar Khan Remains Focused On The Larger Picture
Khan's ability to stay calm under pressure, focusing on the big picture rather than reacting to the loudest critics, will be key to his success moving forward. Steelers fans may be frustrated, but they need to recognize that building a championship contender is a process.

Knee-jerk reactions based on a single trade or missed opportunity are short-sighted and don't take into account the long-term health of the team. The franchise’s success will ultimately be determined by how well Khan can continue to develop and tweak the roster, not by one offseason deal that didn't come to fruition.
As the 2025 offseason progresses, the spotlight will remain on Khan. His ability to withstand the scrutiny and continue to build the team in a way that aligns with long-term success will be critical. For Steelers fans, it’s time to take a step back, give Khan the time he deserves, and trust that the general manager is working tirelessly to bring Pittsburgh back to the postseason and beyond.
