The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of needs they need to fill this offseason. They will likely have to do that through both free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft. Most insiders feel that a group like the defensive line will get a veteran in free agency and find a rookie in the draft; that way, they are both covering their immediate needs and planning for the future.

While everyone makes fun of the Steelers and how "cheap" ownership is, this isn't baseball, and that doesn't necessarily extend to signing players. If they think they can work out a contract with a player that is mutually beneficial to the team, then they will do it. In 2024, they had their largest free agency contract in the franchise's history when they signed inside linebacker Patrick Queen.
Mark Kaboly from The Pat McAfee Show recently joined the Pomp and Joe Show on 93.7 The Fan and said he doesn't expect the 2025 free agency period to be any different. While released players are starting to sign deals with teams, the official free agency window isn't until Wednesday, March 12th, but legal tampering begins on Monday, March 10th. Kaboly said he expects fans to be surprised again this year.
"As I always say, the days of your only free agent being Leonard Pope, are well gone," said Kaboly on the likelihood the Steelers will be active in free agency. "They've been able to spend a decent amount of money and they're not afraid to spend a decent amount of money over the past four, five, six years. I don't see anything different here. I think there's going to be a guy that either comes Monday or Tuesday, that they're tied to, and they're going to sign, and you're going to be like, 'Wow! That's a pretty decent amount of money. Wow! That's not a bad pick.' Where that's going to go, could be a corner, could be defensive line, could be a bunch of different areas, but I definitely think they are going to spend."
Leonard Pope was a tight end the Steelers gave a one-year contract to in 2012. A third-round draft pick, Pope had bounced around the league a little following his former coach, Todd Haley. That happened under former General Manager, Kevin Colbert, who spent 22 seasons helping guide the team's personnel choices.

Steelers' Omar Khan and Minkah Fitzpatrick walk the field before a home game.
When Colbert left the team in 2022, Omar Khan was hired to take his place. Khan had already been with the Steelers for a number of years, and fans were afraid they would get Colbert 2.0 as far as being extremely conservative in the free agent market. However, Khan has shown the world just how savvy and intelligent he is. He has used his incredible negotiating skills to help the team find and retain critical players. Recently, Khan has received a lot of hate from fans for the things he hasn't been able to get done, like a trade for Brandon Aiyuk in 2024, versus appreciation for the things he has done well, like dumping Chase Claypool on the Chicago Bears. Steelers fans should be tingling with anticipation as they wait to see what Khan will have cooked up for them this offseason.
Could The Steelers Exciting Acquisition Be A Wide Receiver?
After failing to obtain a solid number two wide receiver in 2024, that position remains one of the most critical, other than quarterback, as far as fans are concerned. This has the team back to speed dating every remotely available receiver, including Davante Adams, Christian Kirk, and now apparently DK Metcalf.
It was recently announced that Metcalf had requested a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. If he comes to Pittsburgh, he could possibly be reunited with his former quarterback, Russell Wilson. Regardless of who's under center, Metcalf feels like the perfect complement to George Pickens. The two of them would cause chaos for opposing defenses.
