The Pittsburgh Steelers made a blockbuster move by acquiring DK Metcalf, but their quarterback situation remains uncertain. With Justin Fields heading to the New York Jets in free agency, Pittsburgh is left weighing its options between Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers for the 2025 season. The addition of Metcalf alongside George Pickens gives the Steelers an elite receiving duo, but without a clear answer at quarterback, questions linger about how effective this offense can be.

The Steelers also saw a familiar face react to the trade, as former quarterback Ben Roethlisberger posted a video joking about still having a few throws left in him. While some fans speculated about a potential comeback, Roethlisberger quickly shut down any rumors. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, he praised the move, but made it clear that his playing days are over, stating that he has no intention of returning to the NFL.
"Well, I actually was thinking about it," Roethlisberger said. "I put both of my boys out here in 14 jerseys out in the backyard. I couldn't overthrow my one son so I think I am out sadly. I don't think I got it."
The Steelers now shift their focus to solidifying the most important position on the field. With free agency starting to really get going. The Steelers have to decide what they want to do at quarterback. The front office has built a dangerous offense, but without a quarterback to lead it, the Steelers' Super Bowl hopes remain in limbo.
The now 43-year-old quarterback, who played 18 seasons with the Steelers and won two Super Bowls, was just having fun with his comments about returning. As nostalgic and exciting as it would be for Steelers fans to see Roethlisberger under center for one more season, it’s simply not happening. Any speculation about a comeback shouldn’t be taken seriously at this point. Still, it was cool to see Roethlisberger react to the Metcalf trade and share his thoughts on the move.

He’s clearly excited about the addition of Metcalf, believing that he and Pickens can form a dominant duo that will give secondaries nightmares. Roethlisberger praised both receivers for their physicality and play-making ability, noting that defending them will be a tall task for any defense. With two of the best wideouts in the NFL now on the roster, the Steelers have built a dangerous offense on paper.
Steelers Still Trying To Find Out What To Do At Quarterback For 2025 Season
The only missing piece is a quarterback, and that remains the biggest question mark. While the Steelers have been linked to both Wilson and Rodgers, no decision has been made. Fans are eager to see who will step in to lead this talented group, but until Pittsburgh finds its guy, uncertainty looms over what could be one of the league’s most improved offenses.
The Steelers could also turn to the NFL Draft to find their next quarterback, though their options may be limited. There have been some murmurs about Pittsburgh having interest in Jaxson Dart, but his stock has skyrocketed, making it difficult for the Steelers to land him without a major reach. If the Steelers want a young quarterback, drafting Dart early would be a smarter move than taking Kenny Pickett in the first round back in 2022.

Another route the Steelers could explore is finding a quarterback in a value spot later in the draft. If they roll with Wilson or Rodgers as a bridge option, they could take a flyer on a mid-to-late round prospect to develop behind a veteran. Either way, all signs point to Pittsburgh going with an experienced starter in 2025 while potentially adding a rookie to groom for the future. With Metcalf and Pickens in place, the Steelers need to make sure they have a quarterback capable of taking advantage of their elite weapons.
