NFL Insider: Steelers And Aaron Rodgers Could Agree To Deal As Early As Tuesday

It appears as if the Pittsburgh Steelers will lose out on re-signing Justin Fields as the dynamic signal-caller has agreed to terms with the New York Jets. That threw a wrench into the plans for several fans, and the organization still does not have a quarterback solution as the new league year approaches. Russell Wilson returning is an option, but another dark horse that has quickly emerged is veteran Aaron Rodgers. The former Super Bowl champion could potentially find himself agreeing to a deal that would make him the new starting quarterback in the Steel City.

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers stands in front of the media during his introductory press conference in May of 2023 after being traded to the organization.

While most of the quarterback dominos throughout the NFL have fallen, there are still some that need to be knocked down. The Steelers are at the forefront of this, and NBC's Mike Florio reported late on Monday that Pittsburgh and Rodgers are deep into talks and a deal could be done as soon as Tuesday, a day after the legal tampering period began.

"Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Steelers and Rodgers could have an agreement in place as soon as Tuesday," Florio wrote. "He won’t be able to sign until Wednesday, when the Jets release him."

This would be quite the turn of events, especially because mainly believed that the organization wanted to re-sign Fields. With the younger option choosing to go elsewhere, Rodgers' name came to the surface. Signing a guy like Rodgers would be looked at as a win-now move, given the fact that the signal-caller is 41 years old and can't have more than one or two years left in him.

This signing would eliminate any possibility of Wilson returning, and fans wouldn't necessarily be upset after the team ended the 2024 season on a five-game losing skid, which included a playoff loss. He would end up being a one-and-done in Pittsburgh with his anticipated landing spot being the New York Giants. It has already been a pretty hectic offseason for Steelers fans and the new league year hasn't even officially kicked off yet. There is plenty more to come.

Pittsburgh has already made some major moves, with the biggest trading for and then extending Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf. It's rather funny to acknowledge that the Steelers are doing what they can internally to improve the offense, but the most important position in all of football has not been decided on. Fans could know, however, as soon as Tuesday that Rodgers will be given the keys to the kingdom in 2025, and potentially longer.

It is a tad concerning that there still is no long-term solution at quarterback for the Steelers. Fields could have been looked at as one, especially if he performed well for the black and gold in 2025, but that ship has sailed. Now, the front office could be scrambling just to find a respectable name to lead the unit moving forward. It doesn't get much more notable than a first ballot Hall of Famer in Rodgers.

Steelers Awkwardly Sitting With No True Starting Quarterback Option On The Roster

As the new league year gets set to begin on Wednesday, Pittsburgh has yet to agree to terms with a legitimate starting option. Rodgers or Wilson seem to be the new front-runners, with Rodgers having a leg up. A season-ending Achilles tear in 2023 ruined Rodgers' time with the Jets, but it seems as if he is looking for a fresh start. The veteran could have just enough left in the tank for a deep postseason run in the Steel City.
