Darius Slay Was Clearly Scared By Steelers Quarterback Uncertainty But Trusts Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers' uncertain quarterback situation for the 2025 season likely has left many free agents hesitant to commit to the team. With no clear-cut starter at the most critical position on the roster, it’s understandable why players might be wary of joining a franchise with so much instability under center. The uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position not only affects the offense but also the overall confidence in the team’s future.

For a veteran like Darius Slay, who is 34 years old, the need for offensive stability is even more pressing. Slay knows that his time in the NFL is limited, and to have the best chance to finish his career strong, he needs a productive offense that can keep the pressure off the defense. After winning the 2024 Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, Slay joined the Steelers on a one-year deal, hoping to help elevate the Steelers' secondary further.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Slay was asked about the Steelers' quarterback situation, and he didn't shy away from sharing his honest thoughts. While he admitted that the uncertainty around the position had him concerned, Slay emphasized his trust in Head Coach Mike Tomlin. Slay believes that Tomlin's leadership and experience will guide the Steelers through the quarterback dilemma and keep the team on track for success.

"Of course, I have been watching this organization for a long time," Slay said. "I can say I trust this organization more than anything from the outside looking in. With Coach [Tomlin], I wanna bring his resume up, but he has not had a losing season for a reason. I do trust him and whatever he got going. I am with it."

The Steelers have seemingly turned their attention toward 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers as their potential starter for the 2025 season. Rodgers, known for his incredible skill but equally renowned for his polarizing personality, appears to be the frontrunner in Pittsburgh’s search for stability under center.

However, the holdup lies in Rodgers’ tendency to take his time with major decisions, keeping the Steelers and their fans on edge as they await his final word. While many expect him to be under center for the Steelers next season, the uncertainty surrounding Rodgers' decision-making process means that nothing is set in stone.

When dealing with someone as unpredictable as Rodgers, it’s hard to make any assumptions about what might happen. The quarterback’s tendency to stir the pot with his off-field antics and dramatic decisions adds another layer of suspense to Pittsburgh's already uncertain quarterback situation. If Rodgers does decide to join the Steelers, it could bring a new dynamic to the team, but until he makes his move, the Steelers are stuck waiting, with the possibility of a last-minute twist still very much in play.

Steelers Adding Darius Slay Should Sure Up Their Secondary

Some Steelers fans have been puzzled by the team’s decision to offer a one-year, $10 million deal to a 34-year-old cornerback in Slay. To some, it may seem like an overpay, especially given Slay’s age. However, for others, the move makes sense, as they believe Slay still has plenty left in the tank. After playing a key role in the Eagles' Super Bowl win in 2024, Slay continues to prove he’s capable of contributing at a high level, and his respect for the Steelers organization has only fueled his excitement to join the team.

Slay seems genuinely thrilled to be a part of the Steelers and is poised to make a significant impact, both on and off the field. His experience and leadership will be invaluable to Pittsburgh’s young star cornerback, Joey Porter Jr

The pairing of Slay and Porter on the outside could give the Steelers a dynamic duo in the secondary, helping to elevate the team’s defensive unit even further heading into the 2025 season. With Slay’s mentorship, Porter has the opportunity to learn from one of the league’s top veteran cornerbacks, setting up an exciting future for the Steelers' defense.
