Pittsburgh Steelers fans are days into debating whether or not quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a good fit for the team. For various reasons, Rodgers has become a polarizing figure in the league over the past several years. Many fans feel like there's already been a lot of off-field drama. In 2024, when the team began exploring talks with Russell Wilson, many fans felt the same way. Wilson, like Rodgers, thought he still had some left in the tank. Both had shown, with their prior team, that they could win some games and throw the ball down the field. However, both have been accused of being more about themselves than their team.

While in Pittsburgh, Wilson seemed to be doing his best to keep his head down and work. There were rumblings that he and Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith didn't get along well and disagreed on how to run the offense, but there were no signs of the drama he supposedly created in other locker rooms. Could they possibly bottle lightening twice and have similar results from Rodgers?
Rich Eisen recently said he believes Rodgers is a good fit for the Steelers, but he understands why many fans don't want him. He feels like the Steelers are in a similar position to the New York Jets when they initially signed Rodgers. On a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Eisen asked Steelers insider Gerry Dulac from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette if he thinks Rodgers is a good fit for the Steelers.
"Well, Rich, I really don't think he is," said Dulac when asked if Rodgers is a good fit for the Steelers organization. "I think this move is being orchestrated by Mike Tomlin. Now, Mike Tomlin's not going to tell Art Rooney II what to do, but there's no question in my mind this is something that he wants to happen. The majority of feedback I get is pushback; Steeler fans are somewhat surprised that the Steelers would want a player with, I don't want to say, character issues, but he's a different duck, as we all know. And he's going to be 42."
The interesting part is that if Eisen is right, and the Steelers and the Jets have a lot in common situationally, then perhaps that signals that Rodgers isn't a good fit. There was almost nothing good that came out of the Rodgers-Jets marriage. He acted like a de facto general manager deciding who they would hire. Whether or not he was the reason Head Coach Robert Saleh got fired, there was definitely a power struggle between the two. It's hard to imagine that Mike Tomlin would advocate for that in Pittsburgh.

Conversely, Smith did manage to get more out of Justin Fields than the Chicago Bears did. During his six-game start, Fields was making steady progress. When Wilson was healthy and able to take over, he got the team to 10-3. While the team experienced a late-season collapse, Wilson cannot take all the blame for that. Perhaps Smith would be able to work well with Rodgers. According to Dulac, Tomlin certainly thinks so.
Steelers Getting Pressured By Russell Wilson
Rodgers is taking his time making a decision. The question is how long the Steelers will be willing to wait. Dulac indicated that he hasn't heard there is a specific timeframe or deadline, but with so few options out there, they won't be able to wait months.
Wilson is still available, and many fans think they should go ahead and sign him rather than wait on Rodgers. This sentiment increased after word got out that Wilson is planning to meet with the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants. The question is, does Wilson believe he has no chance to return to the Steelers, or is this a ploy to pressure them into making a snap decision? A local insider questioned the timing of the tweets released on X and their identical nature.
