The Pittsburgh Steelers are shocked that they are still in quarterback purgatory as the official free agency period kicks off in 2025. They were unable to work out a deal with Justin Fields, and he ultimately agreed to a deal with the New York Jets. The Jets gave Fields a two-year, $40 million contract with $30 million guaranteed, and it's likely that was more than Pittsburgh wanted to guarantee. However, it left them with very limited options at the end of the day.

Now the Steelers are apparently stuck deciding between Aaron Rodgers and bringing back Russell Wilson. While both of them are on the back end of their career, it has sparked a fierce debate among fans over which one is the better option. The lack of choices has others thinking the Steelers should go ahead and go all in on a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
@BrianERoachSCU @Joe_Kuzma my tin foil hat prediction: the Steelers don’t really want either Russ or Rodgers.. because their QB is either Jaxson Dart or in next year’s draft - they are building the squad before getting their QB (like how plug n play Ben was when he was drafted) pic.twitter.com/pnmpgxqjsB

Longtime Steelers reporter Gerry Dulac from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently said that while Pittsburgh seems to be pursuing Rodgers, Wilson remains an option. The discussions with Rodgers seem to be moving slower than the team would want, and they could go ahead and try to bring back Wilson if they are at an impasse. Dulac said the team has never ruled out the possibility of having Wilson return. A now unrestricted free agent and former Super Bowl winner, Wilson just wasn't at the top of their wish list.
However, with talks stalled out with Rodgers and Fields, and Sam Darold out of the picture, he might become their best choice so they can move the team forward. Regardless, Dulac doesn't think fans should assume drafting one is out of the question. In fact, it might be more likely than fans expect.
"Even if Rodgers or Wilson is signed, it increases the possibility the Steelers could take a quarterback higher than expected in the draft," said Dulac.
The Steelers have been linked to every quarterback in the draft except for Cam Ward, who is expected to be long gone before Pittsburgh picks at 21st overall. That means everyone from Shedeur Sanders to Jaxson Dart is on the table.

Dart has been chiefly projected to go outside of the first round, while Sanders, who has been all over the draft board, has been sliding in recent mocks. Tyler Shough from Louisville has been gaining some ground in mocks and is considered a possibility if General Manager Omar Khan can pick up a second-round pick to replace the one they lost on DK Metcalf or if he slides into the third round.
Has Steelers' Mike Tomlin's Bad Habits Caught Up To Him?
Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin is so universally loved among players that it is hard to imagine anyone saying anything bad about him. He is often one of the top coaches that players want to play for in the league. However, the fans don't necessarily feel the same way.
They are frustrated with the perception that Tomlin makes promises to players that he doesn't keep. They believe that is what happened with Fields. After getting the Steelers off to a solid start in 2024, he was benched in favor of Wilson, who'd been out with an injury. This has fans asking if Fields was upset enough with Tomlin and the way he managed the situation that he preferred to go somewhere else and get a fresh start. The hope is that whatever the future holds with the quarterback position in Pittsburgh, Tomlin manages the situation much better the next time around.
