The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation for the 2025 season is anything but certain. Reports suggest that Aaron Rodgers is taking his sweet time making a decision, which has created a frustrating roadblock for the Steelers' efforts to land him. Both sides seem to be in no rush, leaving Pittsburgh in a holding pattern. As a result, the Steelers are beginning to show real interest in exploring other options — including the possibility of drafting a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The challenge for Pittsburgh is that the 2025 quarterback draft class is widely viewed as underwhelming. Reaching on a prospect could backfire in a big way, but that hasn’t stopped the team from doing its homework. The uncertainty with Rodgers and the limitations of Russell Wilson make it clear the Steelers can’t afford to sit idle and hope for the best.

On Tuesday night, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe had dinner in Tuscaloosa with Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, General Manager Omar Khan, and Quarterbacks Coach Tom Arth. The meeting took place ahead of Milroe’s Pro Day and signals that the Steelers are seriously evaluating all options. Whether it’s Rodgers, Wilson, or a young draft pick, or both, Pittsburgh knows it needs to find the right answer at the most important position in football.

First of all, while a dinner before a pro day doesn’t guarantee that the Steelers will draft Milroe, it’s worth noting that the head coach, GM, and quarterbacks coach all made the effort to meet with him. This shows a level of genuine interest and curiosity about his potential.

The Steelers aren't known to waste time, and bringing these key figures together to sit down with Milroe signals that they are seriously considering him as a potential addition to their roster. It’s not a casual meeting, and the presence of the leadership team makes it clear that Milroe is someone the Steelers are paying attention to, especially as they continue to evaluate all their options at the quarterback position.

The Steelers have been in a bit of a holding pattern with their quarterback situation. They still haven’t locked down their long-term answer at the position, and with the uncertainty surrounding Rodgers, they can’t afford to sit back and wait indefinitely. The team needs a younger quarterback who can develop and lead them into the future.

Steelers Might Get Aaron Rodgers And Draft A Quarterback

That’s why even if they’re still pursuing Rodgers, the possibility of drafting a quarterback, such as Milroe, in the 2025 draft should not be overlooked. This proactive approach demonstrates the Steelers’ commitment to securing a strong, long-term solution at quarterback, regardless of whether Rodgers joins the team or not. However, taking a raw prospect like Milroe is not without risk. Especially if Pittsburgh has to reach to get him.

In the end, the Steelers’ strategy is all about staying ahead of the curve and keeping their options open. The Steelers have been trying to find their next franchise quarterback but haven't been successful to this point. Drafting a quarterback, especially in a year when the QB class is somewhat weak, might seem risky, but it could also be a move to secure their future.

If they do go that route, it’s not an indication that Rodgers is out of the picture — rather, it’s just the Steelers taking the necessary steps to ensure they have a quarterback of the future in place. The dinner with Milroe is just another sign that the Steelers are covering all their bases while they navigate the complicated decision of who will lead their offense for years to come.
