The Pittsburgh Steelers have found themselves consistently at the center of quarterback-related speculation, their name constantly linked to various potential signal-callers. The team's current strategy (waiting for Aaron Rodgers' decision), has left them in a temporary standstill. However, while the quarterback situation remains unresolved, the Steelers' front office has been actively addressing other critical positions on their roster during the ongoing free agency period. Recent developments include the departure of their starting running back, Najee Harris, a move that has prompted the team to seek reinforcements in the backfield. To this end, the Steelers have signed Kenneth Gainwell, adding a new dimension to their running back corps. He signed a one-year, $1.79 million contract. In addition to Gainwell, the team retains the versatile Jaylen Warren, as well as the experienced Cordarrelle Patterson and Jonathan Ward, providing a diverse range of options for their ground game.

Despite these additions, Bill Barnwell, a prominent analyst for ESPN, believes that the Steelers could further bolster their running back depth by pursuing another player. Barnwell's analysis suggests that an additional running back could provide valuable competition, create depth, and offer strategic flexibility for the Steelers' offensive scheme.

With Harris now a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, Barnwell has suggested that the Steelers should target JK Dobbins, a former running back for the same team, as a prime free agent acquisition. While Barnwell doesn't envision Dobbins stepping into Harris's role as the starting running back, he strongly believes that incorporating a player of Dobbins' caliber would bring a range of strategic benefits to the Steelers' roster.

"It's tough to project Dobbins into a full-time role, and frankly, it's probably not the best thing for his health. Given eight to 10 carries a game as a situational back, though, he could still be a useful player in the right offense," Barnwell states in ESPN.

Dobbins possesses a range of valuable attributes that could significantly enhance the Steelers' offensive capabilities. To further illustrate his potential, Barnwell highlights a compelling statistic that emphasizes Dobbins' appeal to NFL teams.

"Since 2020, the list of backs with 300 carries who have averaged more yards per rush than Dobbins' 5.2 consists of De'Von Achane and Jahmyr Gibbs," Barnwell shares.

In the previous season, Dobbins demonstrated his capabilities as a productive running back, amassing 195 rushing attempts, which translated to a total of 905 rushing yards. He also proved to be a consistent threat in the red zone, contributing 9 touchdowns for the Chargers. Dobbins split running back duties with Gus Edwards. Interestingly, Edwards, who formed a friendship with Dobbins, was also released by the Chargers.

The primary concern surrounding Dobbins centers on his extensive and recurring injury history. Dobbins has unfortunately developed a reputation for being injury-prone, a factor that has significantly impacted his availability and on-field consistency.

Knee injuries have been a recurring issue in Dobbins' career, repeatedly hindering his progress. He has also dealt with Achilles injuries. These repeated physical setbacks resulted in him missing the entirety of the 2021 season, a substantial portion of the 2022 season, and virtually all of the 2023 season. Despite the previous season being considered his healthiest in recent years, Dobbins still found himself on injured reserve after sustaining an ACL sprain in Week 12. This unfortunate incident occurred during a game against his former team, the Baltimore Ravens, further highlighting the persistent challenges he has faced in maintaining his health and staying on the field.

Is Dobbins A Good Fit For The Steelers?

Dobbins is known for his dynamic playing style, combining power and agility. He breaks tackles with force and consistently gains yards after contact.. He possesses the ability to run with considerable force, breaking tackles and gaining crucial yards after contact. In addition to his power, Dobbins exhibits impressive quickness, enabling him to swiftly navigate through defensive gaps and exploit open spaces. Furthermore, he demonstrates versatility as a pass-catcher, proving capable of contributing to the passing game when required.

Interestingly, Dobbins' powerful running style bears a resemblance to that of Harris. Harris himself has expressed a sentiment that his receiving skills are often overlooked, suggesting a shared appreciation for versatility within the running back position. This similarity in playing styles could potentially make the Steelers an ideal landing spot for Dobbins, offering a familiar offensive scheme and a chance to contribute to a team that values his specific skill set.
