The Pittsburgh Steelers have been entangled in a quarterback saga surrounding Aaron Rodgers for a few weeks now. It started when the Steelers appeared ready to sign Russell Wilson or bring Justin Fields back for the 2025 season, but Fields quickly found a new home with the New York Jets. Wilson has been an option all offseason, but the Steelers are reportedly more interested in the 41-year-old quarterback. The Steelers feel like they know exactly what they’ll get with Wilson, but are curious about Rodgers’ potential to lift the team back to Super Bowl contender status.

The Steelers appear to believe that Rodgers could be the perfect bridge quarterback while they continue their search for a long-term franchise leader. Even at his age, Rodgers still commands respect around the league, and his ability to elevate a team with talent around him isn’t in question. Though some believe it should be after what they saw from his Jets team during the 2024 season. Pittsburgh’s front office seems willing to be patient, knowing that landing a player of Rodgers’ caliber — even for a short window — could completely change the outlook for the 2025 season and beyond.

Rodgers is in no rush to make his decision, but on Sunday, NFL insider Mike Florio revealed on Pro Football Talk that after speaking to a source close to the situation, Rodgers to the Steelers is considered a very safe bet. Florio’s report has added serious fuel to the speculation, and Steelers fans are buzzing at the possibility. While nothing is official, all signs point toward Pittsburgh being one of the most likely destinations for Rodgers.

"As one source in the general vicinity of those who would be in position to know said Sunday, it’s a 'safe bet' that quarterback Aaron Rodgers eventually will sign with the Steelers," Florio wrote. "Rodgers, if you haven’t heard, spent more than six hours visiting the Steelers on Friday."

Rodgers recently met with Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, General Manager Omar Khan, and Team President Art Rooney II on Friday, spending over six hours discussing potential future plans. While he left the meeting without a deal, Steelers insiders were quick to clarify that this should not be interpreted as a sign of whether he will sign with Pittsburgh. Rodgers reportedly already knows the offer on the table and visited primarily to build a personal connection with the team’s leadership.

Rodgers, a polarizing figure in the sports world, has long been a mega superstar whose every move garners attention. This meeting was just another step in what’s been an ongoing saga, with Rodgers taking his time before making a massive decision about his future. The Steelers’ approach, however, seems as though they’re operating with the assumption that Rodgers will soon be their quarterback. Whether this confidence is based on inside knowledge or simply strategic optimism, it’s clear Pittsburgh believes they have a real shot at landing the future Hall of Famer.

Despite the lack of a formal agreement, the Steelers appear to be moving forward as if Rodgers is already in place. It’s possible they know something the public doesn’t—after all, Pittsburgh’s front office has a long history of keeping things close to the vest. If they truly do have an inside track, Rodgers’ next move could be just a matter of time, as Florio predicts.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Rodgers will be joining the Steelers for the 2025 season, and when it happens, it will undoubtedly be headline news. However, the decision will spark significant debate among Steelers fans, especially given Rodgers’ age and the hefty price tag that comes with him. At 41 years old, and coming off a rough 2024 season where he only won five games, many will question whether the Steelers are making the right choice by investing so much in a quarterback at the tail end of his career.

Steelers View Aaron Rodgers As A Super Bowl Contending Quarterback

Despite the concerns, both the Steelers and many around the league still view Rodgers as a winning quarterback, regardless of what happened in 2024. His track record speaks for itself, with four MVP awards and a Super Bowl title under his belt. Many believe that with the right support and a fresh start, Rodgers can still perform at a high level and be the key to putting Pittsburgh back in contention for a championship.

While the move may seem risky to some, the Steelers appear confident that Rodgers’ experience and leadership will be invaluable as they continue to search for their next long-term quarterback. His arrival could also bring a level of stability and veteran presence to the offense that the Steelers have been missing. In the end, the risk could prove worthwhile if Rodgers can elevate the team back to the elite status they’ve been striving for.
