Cameron Heyward, a respected veteran presence and a prominent leader within the Steelers organization, recently provided valuable insights into the team's potential draft strategy. On his podcast titled Not Just Football, Heyward, shared some opinions regarding the upcoming NFL Draft. Specifically, he focused his attention on the defensive line prospects. During this segment, Heyward shared his personal evaluations and highlighted the names of several players whom he finds particularly promising and well-suited for the Steelers' defensive scheme.

Heyward highlighted three defensive line prospects, starting with Kenneth Grant from the University of Michigan. Grant's college statistics in 2024, including 3 sacks in 12 games, provide a glimpse into his potential. However, his reputation extends far beyond those numbers. He's recognized for his ability to anchor the interior defensive line, making him exceptionally difficult to displace and effectively shutting down opposing running attacks. What sets Grant apart is his surprising athleticism; despite his imposing size, he demonstrates impressive quickness and agility, enabling him to make plays that belie his physical dimensions.

"Freakishly big... He looks like an alien next to a lot of the other guys," Heyward said.

Heyward's assessment of the defensive line prospect was notably influenced by the player's sheer physical size, a characteristic that stood out in comparison to other potential draft picks. Beyond the player's size, Heyward also highlighted the prospect's impressive use of his hands, a crucial skill for defensive linemen. This combination of size and hand skills, in Heyward's expert opinion, makes the prospect a potential fit for the Steelers' defensive scheme. He believes the player's skill set would complement the Steelers' existing defensive line and contribute to the team's overall defensive effectiveness.

Heyward also highlighted Derrick Harmon from the University of Oregon. Harmon's 2024 college statistics include 5 sacks in 14 games, indicating his potential as a pass rusher. However, his strength lies in his powerful physique, which makes him a formidable presence against the run. Furthermore, Harmon demonstrates a valuable versatility, displaying the ability to effectively play multiple positions along the defensive line, including both defensive end and nose tackle. This adaptability enhances his value as a prospect.

"I like Harmon from Oregon. Iowa, they have [Yahya] Black," Heyward continued.

Heyward also mentioned Yahya Black from the University of Iowa. While Black's 2024 college statistics show only 1 sack in 18 games, he did contribute a forced fumble. His playing style is characterized by his impressive raw power and strength, which he effectively utilizes to disrupt offensive plays from the interior defensive line. Black excels at controlling space and establishing a formidable presence, making it exceedingly challenging for offensive linemen to move him from his position.

Does Heyward's Opinion Have An Impact On The Steelers' Decision?

On his podcast, Heyward, despite his extensive NFL experience and well-informed opinions on player evaluations, made it clear that the ultimate decisions regarding draft selections and roster construction rest solely with Head Coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Omar Khan. He emphasized that their expertise and judgment are paramount in shaping the team's future. However, amidst the Steelers' current quarterback uncertainty, a position traditionally associated with on-field leadership, Heyward's established presence and 14 seasons of NFL experience offer a significant source of leadership for the team. In a moment of potential instability, with the starting quarterback role vacant, Heyward's seasoned guidance and respected voice provide a crucial anchor for the Steelers.

Heyward embodies the complex and diverse qualities that define an authentic NFL leader. His influence on the team transcends the mere execution of his duties along the defensive front. His on-field skills have been repeatedly acknowledged, resulting in a remarkable accumulation of honors. The 7 Pro Bowl nominations he has received serve as a powerful testament to his unwavering performance and his significant impact amongst the NFL's most distinguished players. His 7 All-Pro selections solidify his position as one of the most consistently dominant defensive forces currently active in professional football. These achievements not only highlight his individual ability, but also the consistent high level of play he has maintained throughout his career.
