The Pittsburgh Steelers' decision to trade for DK Metcalf was a bold move that immediately reshaped their offense, but it hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of adding another top-tier wide receiver. With George Pickens entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025, there is uncertainty about whether Pittsburgh will commit to him long-term. While pairing Metcalf and Pickens gives the Steelers one of the most dangerous receiving duos in the league, the front office could still be looking to secure future depth at the position.

Emeka Egbuka, one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft, would bring another explosive weapon to the Steelers' offense. A dynamic playmaker with elite route-running ability, Egbuka has the talent to step into a major role immediately. If Pittsburgh is unwilling or unable to extend Pickens, drafting Egbuka could be a way to ensure long-term stability at the position. While adding a wide receiver in the first round might not seem like an immediate need after acquiring Metcalf, the Steelers are clearly keeping their options open as they continue to shape their roster for the future.
On Thursday, NFL insider Tony Pauline revealed that Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin had an exclusive dinner with Egbuka, a strong indication of the team’s interest. Tomlin has a history of personally scouting players the Steelers are considering in the first round, making this meeting significant. While Pittsburgh has made a major investment in Metcalf, the possibility of drafting another elite receiver remains on the table.
"The Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Chargers were two teams spoken about in Columbus who will look at receivers hard in the first round," Pauline said. "And despite their moves this offseason, so too will the Steelers, as Egbuka had dinner with Head Coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Omar Khan on Tuesday night."
It’s important to note that a head coach having dinner with a draft prospect doesn’t guarantee the team will select them or even have them at the top of their draft board. However, it does indicate that the Steelers—specifically Tomlin—are doing exclusive, in-depth homework on Egbuka. Pittsburgh is clearly making an effort to get a more thorough evaluation of the Ohio State wide receiver, especially if he’s available when they’re on the clock in the first round and they decide to target the position. Among all wide receiver prospects, Egbuka remains the one most closely linked to the Steelers.

General Manager Omar Khan was also in attendance at the dinner, further signaling the Steelers' serious interest in Egbuka. The OSU standout proved himself as a star at the college level, shining in his final season despite playing in a crowded and highly talented Buckeyes offense. His ability to excel in a loaded receiver room only adds to his appeal for Pittsburgh, a team that values competitive, battle-tested playmakers.
Egbuka played a key role in helping OSU capture the 2024 National Championship, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure on the biggest stage. He finished his final college season with 81 receptions for 1,011 yards and 10 touchdowns, cementing himself as one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Steelers Drafting Emeka Egbuka Might Be Telling About George Pickens' Future
Many Steelers fans recognize Pickens' immense talent. Through his first three seasons, he has proven himself as one of the most gifted wide receivers in the NFL. However, questions about his attitude and effort have led some fans to believe the Steelers should consider trading him. Others feel that, even if he isn’t moved, Pittsburgh shouldn’t commit a massive contract to him after the 2025 season.
If the Steelers draft Egbuka, it could be a telling sign that they don’t plan to extend Pickens. It could also allow them to secure a talented young receiver on a cost-effective rookie deal for four years while Metcalf and Pickens take up a significant portion of the salary cap. Financially, this move could help Pittsburgh maintain flexibility while still fielding an elite receiving corps.

Regardless of their decision, all eyes will be on the Steelers as they navigate both the draft and Pickens’ future. Whether they choose to invest long-term in their current duo or bring in a young star like Egbuka, their approach will have major implications for the team's offensive future.
