Omar Khan Acknowledges Steelers' Recent Failures In 1 Important Area

News broke on Monday morning that new Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf went through a workout with potential signee Aaron Rodgers over the weekend. That may hint at the fact that the veteran is simply trying to do his due diligence before committing to play for the Steel City in 2025, but the fan base is still a little uneasy about the signal-caller position. No one is sure what the long-term plan is, and there doesn't really seem to be one right now. Whether the team enters the 2025 NFL Draft with or without Rodgers, the position could absolutely be targeted by General Manager Omar Khan.

Coaches and general managers from across the league are attending the NFL Annual League Meeting in Palm Beach, Florida, which gives local and national media the opportunity to ask pressing questions about all things football related. Khan was in front of the microphones on Monday, and it's no shock that the signal-caller area was the primary focus of those asking some questions.

According to Dale Lolley, a writer for the team's official website, Khan spoke a little bit about the last 12 months or so, and how the organization has been in a constant cycle with the most important position in all of sports. The leader of the front office acknowledged that the Steelers need a legitimate solution.

"It's not easy. It's not ideal," Khan said. "I'll put it that way. We addressed it last year. We're addressing it this year. At some point, we have to find the long-term solution. I'll say that might happen this year. It could happen next year, but in the meantime, we're going to keep doing whatever we can to win a championship this year."

This was typical general manager talk from Khan, as he wanted to finish his quote with focusing on the 2025 campaign, but it's been proven that franchises across the NFL need a go-to guy under center. Pittsburgh hasn't had anything close to one of those since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 campaign. The search is still on, and as Khan noted, the goal is to grab a long-term starter in one of the next two offseasons.

Khan also mentioned that the plan is to bring in at least two more quarterbacks before training camp. He didn't give any insight on whether or not he believes Rodgers will be one of them, but it sure seems as if the team is preparing for the next two additions to be Rodgers and a rookie. Pittsburgh could also take the route of signing Rodgers, as well as an additional veteran, but that seems unlikely because of Mason Rudolph's presence.

The fan base is beginning to get restless with the quarterback situation, and it does not help that the organization has not won a playoff game since the 2016 season. While several years with Roethlisberger led to no wins in the postseason before he left, there hasn't been success since, either. Khan needs to figure out how to find stability.

Steelers Have Difficult Task Of Finding Future Of Franchise In Mid-To-Late First Round

Pittsburgh is expected to have several compensatory picks given to them in 2026, which could make a trade up easier, but the reality of the fact is that the team doesn't go under .500. It hasn't since 2003, and a significant move is going to need to be made to skyrocket up in round one, or the talent evaluators are going to have to find a diamond in the rough. Overall, franchise quarterbacks don't grow on trees and the Steelers are finding that out.
