The Pittsburgh Steelers have been rumored to already have a secret deal in place for Aaron Rodgers. It makes sense with the way the 2025 offseason has gone. The Steelers made little effort to get a deal done with Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, both quarterbacks who left on very affordable contracts that Pittsburgh could’ve easily afforded. This lack of action signaled little interest in moving forward with any quarterback from the 2024 season.

Instead, the Steelers have focused all of their efforts on securing a deal with the 41-year-old quarterback, Rodgers. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has been peppered with questions about Rodgers, but has consistently tried to avoid answering them. Tomlin’s silence speaks volumes, especially given the growing speculation around Rodgers’ potential move to Pittsburgh.
Art Rooney II has been more candid about the situation, admitting that they won’t wait forever and hinting that they want a deal done soon. Steelers insider Jeff Hathhorn took to 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday, where he shared that he believes a deal has already been done, further fueling rumors that Rodgers could soon be a Steeler.
"Oh yeah," Hathhorn said. "Oh yeah, yes [they have a secret deal in place with Aaron Rodgers], but there is always that half a percent, which is why they are not saying it firmly. But yeah, I believe it. I also believe, listen to what Mike said, there’s no way they would wait until training camp to figure out who their quarterback was."
Hathhorn believes it’s pretty obvious that the Steelers and Rodgers already have a secret handshake deal in place. This makes sense given the way Pittsburgh has moved during this offseason. From the big-time blockbuster deal to bring wide receiver DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh, to Metcalf reportedly throwing with Rodgers, the clues are adding up. Metcalf appeared confident about the Steelers’ quarterback situation, perhaps even suggesting that he feels the secret deal with Rodgers is already set.

Insiders have been cautious in their reporting on Rodgers, as he is known for being secretive. Rodgers has a way of keeping the media at arm's length, making it difficult for insiders to get a true read on his intentions. This is why the reporting around him has been so careful, with few willing to say anything definitive. However, it’s becoming more apparent that Rodgers has likely agreed to something behind closed doors. The throwing session with Metcalf only fueled these rumors, and now Steelers insiders are beginning to echo the same sentiments.

The silence from the organization and the strategic moves they’ve made suggest that the Steelers are indeed on the verge of a major quarterback shake-up. The growing speculation around Rodgers is impossible to ignore, and it seems increasingly clear that the Steelers are lining up their future with the 41-year-old quarterback in mind.
Steelers' Silence Has Spoken Volumes
As the offseason progresses, the Steelers' quiet, but calculated, moves are speaking volumes. The focus on Rodgers, coupled with the lack of attention given to other quarterbacks like Fields and Wilson, signals that the front office has something big in the works. It’s clear they’re playing the long game, and while the public silence continues, those in the know seem more convinced than ever that Rodgers is the answer to Pittsburgh’s quarterback dilemma.

With training camp on the horizon, it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out. Whether the rumored handshake deal is confirmed or not, the Steelers’ actions are laying the groundwork for a major shift. If Rodgers does end up in Pittsburgh, it will mark the beginning of a new era—one that could change the course of the franchise for years to come.
