Steelers Could Have New Opportunity To Completely Shock The NFL World

The Pittsburgh Steelers are simply sitting around and waiting for future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to make a decision on his future. Art Rooney II recently said that it appears as if the veteran will sign with the organization, but also noted that the team is not going to wait forever. Mason Rudolph is currently the only legitimate starting option on the roster, and the franchise could elect to select a signal-caller in the mid-to-late rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft. There's always the slim possibility of General Manager Omar Khan doing something unexpected, too.

One individual that some thought the Steelers may trade for was Joe Milton III. That didn't end up happening, as it was reported on Thursday morning that he was being dealt to the Dallas Cowboys.

Many are theorizing that the Cowboys will utilize Milton as Dak Prescott's backup, but with Micah Parsons expected to land a huge contract extension, it's fair to wonder if Dallas would entertain the thought of dealing Prescott to get out of his massive contract, especially because he is coming off of a brutal hamstring injury that ended his 2024 campaign.

If the Cowboys are able to land an additional first-round pick in 2025, they could likely package it with their own to move up in the draft with the goal of selecting Shedeur Sanders -- whose father, Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, played five seasons in Dallas. No one can put this past Jerry Jones, despite it being maybe a little unlikely. The Steelers could be the perfect team to acquire Prescott too, mainly due to the quarterback need and plethora of cap space in upcoming years.

The Steelers seem pretty content on simply waiting for Rodgers to finally put pen to paper, but if he continues to push off officially sealing the deal, then Pittsburgh may have to look at different options. A blockbuster trade for Prescott would be unprecedented and unlikely, but Khan has proven that he is not afraid to go against what the organization has historically done when it comes to business.

The likelihood of Dallas trading its franchise signal-caller is slim, unless Jones knows exactly what he needs to move up in the draft and select Sanders. It's possible that he is already regretting the massive contract given to Prescott, and the idea of selecting one of his former player's sons in late April to be the future of the organization is becoming more attractive.

Pittsburgh needs a crazy amount of help on the defensive line, but it'd be interesting to see if Khan and co. would be willing to give up the 21st overall pick for someone with Prescott's talents. It's all hypothetical, but not as asinine as some may think. The Steelers need a quarterback. The Cowboys need to pay the top young defender in the NFL and have a lot tied up with just two players. The main issue, however, is a pre-June 1st trade designation has Dallas taking on $138.5 million in dead cap.

That number is absolutely massive, but could it be manageable if Dallas has two quarterbacks on the roster that are on rookie contracts? It's an intriguing situation to think about.

Steelers Trading For Prescott Would Shock NFL

The Cowboys accepting that much dead cap space would be rather shocking, which is the main challenge if a trade is even discussed. After dealing a fifth-round pick for Milton - a backup - it sure feels as if Dallas has some ulterior motives. That may not be moving on from Prescott, but if the opportunity presented itself, the Steelers would arguably be one of the more likely destinations for him to get shipped off to. It all depends on how much Jones may really want Sanders.
