The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the most intriguing stories of the 2025 offseason in the NFL. The team's quarterback room is completely turning over for the second season in a row, and it is still unclear who the starting quarterback is going to be come September. The only two players under contract at the position currently are Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson, and neither option should be considered a reliable starting QB entering a 17-game season. This has the fan base on edge as the entire city of Pittsburgh continues to wait for a decision from Aaron Rodgers, but the future of the position for the Steelers seems bleak.

Pittsburgh has had interest in Rodgers since the first week of free agency, but the quarterback is still making a decision on his future. Pittsburgh seems like the only real option if the four-time league MVP wants to be a starter during the 2025 season, while retirement is also on the table. He has already visited the Steelers and the two sides seem to be in agreement on every thing contractually, the quarterback is just taking his time finalizing it. This can create some tension, and NFL insider Josina Anderson posted on social media Thursday sharing how it feels inside the organization.
Meanwhile from a league source on the #Steelers: "The vibe? I would say it feels a little weird here. The running joke around here right now is 'who's going to be our quarterback?' Now, I wouldn't say there's any panic though; but the current QB depth says what it says."

It's unclear who her source was for this information, but it was someone who is fairly tapped in with the league. Not having a trusted starting-caliber quarterback at this stage of the offseason is unheard of, especially when the organization is not in position to guarantee themselves one of the top quarterbacks in the upcoming draft. The Steelers can be put in a really difficult spot if Rodgers decides to do anything other than sign in Pittsburgh, which is exactly why the feeling in the building might seem off.

All of the big names within the organization have spoken out about the potential of Rodgers coming to Pittsburgh, and all statements have seemed positive and optimistic. Head Coach Mike Tomlin, General Manager Omar Khan, and Team President Art Rooney II have all delivered promising statements regarding the idea of Rodgers becoming a Steeler after the quarterback was in the building for a visit -- which means the team's brass is confident in its abilities to get a deal done.
The organization is likely feeling uneasy after the countless efforts to land a quarterback prior to Rodgers. The team tried to re-sign Justin Fields and failed. Matthew Stafford chose to sign a new deal with the Los Angeles Rams instead of exploring a trade to Pittsburgh, and Sam Darnold chose to sign with the Seattle Seahawks over the Steelers in free agency. Pittsburgh doesn't have the best recent track record when it comes to acquiring a quarterback.

Steelers Are Not Showing Any Panic When It Comes To Quarterback Situation
Although the vibe in the Steelers building feels a bit weird according to Anderson's source, there is no panic in Pittsburgh. The organization has done extensive research when it comes to the quarterbacks entering the league via the 2025 NFL Draft, so a rookie will be in play throughout the draft. The franchise is also comfortable with Rudolph. He has made countless starts for Pittsburgh across his six seasons with the Steelers, and he was the hero of the 2023 season. He led Pittsburgh to a 3-0 record at the end of the regular season and was able to punch a ticket to the postseason.
Starting Rudolph or an unproven rookie would not be ideal, but the organization is not going to panic. There is a winning culture in Pittsburgh, and that is expected to continue, regardless of who is under center.
