The Pittsburgh Steelers parted ways with running back Najee Harris after the 2024 season. In his four years with the team, Harris rushed for over 1,000 yards each season and never missed a game — a rare accomplishment for a back who handled 1,097 carries during that span. The Steelers declined his fifth-year option before the 2024 season, and once the year concluded, they allowed him to hit free agency. Harris signed a $5.25 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers shortly after.

While the move marked a clear shift in direction for Pittsburgh’s offense, it also had a personal impact on tight end Pat Freiermuth. The two came into the league together in 2021 and quickly became best friends, often seen as one of the closest player duos on the roster. Harris’ departure is understandably emotional for Freiermuth, who spent his first four seasons lining up beside him.

During an appearance on The Christian Kuntz Podcast on Thursday, Freiermuth acknowledged that he didn't agree with how Harris left. He shared that Harris expressed certain frustrations with the Steelers organization that Freiermuth didn’t fully agree with. While he didn’t go into specifics, the comments suggest that the friendship may now carry a competitive edge. One that will add fuel when the Steelers and Chargers eventually meet in the 2025 NFL season.

"Yeah, man, Naj and I were really close," Freiermuth said. "He would come over every single week for dinner. Not having that tradition and stuff, like sitting on the plane talking with him and venting after a tough loss. We have experienced a lot of highs and lows so far in our career so just going through that with him. It’s gonna be tough."

Freiermuth went on to say that he’s genuinely excited about the prospect of facing Harris on the field.

While they’ve shared a deep bond throughout their time together in Pittsburgh, the prospect of competing against his best friend in a different uniform is something that fuels his drive even more. It’s clear that despite the friendship, both are ready for the challenge ahead.

"I didn’t agree with the way he went out," Freiermuth said. "I called him and we talked about it. Listen I love Naj, he’s one of my best friends and I am excited for the opportunity he has. When we play LA this year, you know he’s gonna be running hard, but we will be hitting him harder. I am fu***** yelling at his a** on the sidelines."

Kuntz jumped in, saying he promises that Harris will be talking back. Freiermuth agreed, noting that he loves the competitive fire Harris brings to the table. The exchange added a layer of excitement to the rivalry, with both players acknowledging that the friendly banter will only make the competition more intense.

It’s definitely going to be a bittersweet moment for Freiermuth as he moves forward without his best friend. The two entered the NFL together in the 2021 draft and quickly became close, navigating the tough transition from college football to the NFL side by side. Their bond grew stronger as they supported each other through the challenges of their early careers.

While many Steelers fans have debated Harris’ impact during his four seasons in Pittsburgh, Freiermuth and Kuntz made sure to give him the recognition he deserved, emphasizing how special they felt Harris was as a runner and the work ethic he brought to the team.

Now, Harris is embarking on a new opportunity with the Chargers, and he’s excited about it. After leaving the Steelers, he made some comments about his time in Pittsburgh that, while not overly harsh, still rubbed Freiermuth the wrong way.
