With the 2025 NFL Draft approaching, the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback search could be coming to an end. While Pittsburgh once seemingly was dead set on landing a veteran like Aaron Rodgers, the team will now likely look to the draft to try and land a quarterback of the future. The most promising signal-caller candidate that the Steelers have been projected to land is University of Colorado's Shedeur Sanders. Former Pittsburgh Steelers defender and member of the Colorado Buffaloes, Chad Brown, gave his thoughts on Sanders as a quarterback. He compared him to a former Steelers rival.

On Tuesday, Brown appeared on 93.7 The Fan and gave his thoughts on Sanders as a prospect for the Steelers. Brown knows plenty about Sanders as a prospect through their shared collegiate connections and had a positive opinion of the young quarterback. When asked what quarterback Sanders reminds him of, Brown named former Cleveland Browns quarterback, Jameis Winston.

"I want to say Jameis Winston without all the interceptions," said Brown. "You see what Jameis Winston does, he tries to extend plays too long. Shedeur does that a bit, but not to that same level.

Brown said that arm strength, accuracy, and knowing when to get rid of the ball were the biggest challenges for Sanders. The young quarterback will need to work on making plays faster, however, he isn't currently throwing as many interceptions as Winston and has time to improve. It's unclear how high of a ceiling Sanders has, but Brown has high hopes for him, should he land in Pittsburgh.

Former Colorado Buffs quarterback Shedeur Sanders sacked seven times in loss to UCLA in 2023.

The Steelers have previously found a top-tier quarterback from Colorado, Kordell Stewart. Stewart led the Steelers to the AFC Championship on multiple occasions. Brown said that Stewart was ahead of his time and that Sanders could potentially have a better career in Pittsburgh than Stewart did.

"From a passing perspective, considering the rules of today's game, the way today's game is played, the way wide receivers are valued and rewarded contractually, Shedeur will have a better statistical career than Kordell had," said Brown. "Will he take the Steelers to the championship game as Kordell did? That remains to be seen. But statistically, he is a more polished passer walking in the door than Kordell was as a Colorado Buffalo going into the Pittsburgh Steelers."

If Brown's prediction is true, Pittsburgh could have a promising future with Sanders. Sanders would have plenty of weapons on offense, including wide receivers DK Metcalf and George Pickens. The strength of Pittsburgh's offense could give Sanders the tools he needs to improve as a quarterback.

As exciting as landing the number two quarterback prospect would be however, it's still up in the air whether or not the Steelers could realistically land Sanders.

The discussion surrounding Sanders' landing with the Steelers has been a rollercoaster of emotions. Sanders met with the Steelers for a pre-draft visit, increasing speculation that Pittsburgh could trade up for the quarterback. Reports later emerged that the meeting didn't go well, and that Sanders may not be interested in becoming a Pittsburgh Steeler. The narrative of a rocky meeting between the Steelers and Sanders was later dismissed as a baseless rumor.

Steelers Will Have Multiple Options At QB When They're On The Clock

Should the Steelers miss out on Sanders, they would be left to pursue prospects like Jaxon Dart and Jalen Milroe. However, if Sanders isn't an option, the Steelers may not be inclined to take a quarterback 21st overall. It's all speculation at this point, but Steelers fans will have an answer by Thursday evening.
