With the 2025 NFL Draft quickly approaching, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in full preparation mode. This offseason has been defined by significant roster changes, both in terms of new additions and key departures, fueling considerable discussion around the team. Dominating much of the media attention, however, is the unresolved issue of who will be the Steelers' starting quarterback, leaving fans with numerous questions about the team's strategy heading into the draft.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike Tomlin stepped in front of the media for a press conference on Tuesday to address the various questions and concerns surrounding the team's draft strategy. In response to a question about the possibility of trading back, considering the depth of talent at positions of interest, Khan shared his perspective.
"Absolutely, 100%, I mean it gives you options," Khan said.
The Steelers possess a unique draft capital situation that will significantly shape their draft strategy. They currently hold the 21st overall pick, but then face a considerable wait until their next selection at 83rd overall in the third round, having traded their second-round pick for veteran wide receiver DK Metcalf. As a result, there are reports suggesting the Steelers might be interested in trading back from their first-round spot as a potential avenue to acquire a pick in the missing second round.
Of course, any potential trade hinges on finding a willing partner. During the press conference, Khan was asked whether preliminary discussions about pick swaps had already occurred, acknowledging that the majority of draft trades typically happen on draft day itself. Here's how Khan responded to that question.
"Already started. You know amongst our group of GMs [General Managers]... we talk all the time." Khan responded. "We kind of get an idea."
Given these insights, the Steelers' ultimate draft decisions remain unknown. Numerous scenarios have been proposed, showing a wide range of potential outcomes. While the quarterback vacancy is the most heavily discussed need, with recent reports suggesting top prospect Shedeur Sanders could be available at pick 21, the Steelers also have other pressing needs they could address, potentially by maneuvering back into the second round.

This naturally leads to speculation about which teams the Steelers are currently engaged in active trade discussions with. Although nothing is final until draft day, the Steelers' front office is undoubtedly trying to understand the plans of other organizations, as this will heavily influence their own approach. However, Khan wisely noted in the press conference the potential for deception in these early talks, emphasizing that every team's primary objective is to assemble the strongest roster possible to compete for the Super Bowl championship.
The unpredictable nature of the draft will play a key role in potential draft trades. The 2024 NFL Draft demonstrated this clearly, with an early surge of quarterback selections, seeing six taken in the top 12. This unexpected prioritization of the quarterback position, even in a strong class, highlights its premium value. This means the 2025 draft could see similar surprises, with talented players dropping and unexpected risers, making the Steelers' first-round selection all the more critical.
The Steelers' Draft Strategy Could Still Be Affected
The Steelers currently face a significant void at starting quarterback. While they await a decision from veteran Aaron Rodgers, following reports of an offer extended by the team, the lack of a clear timeline is causing concern among fans regarding alternative plans should Rodgers decline. The upcoming NFL Draft offers a crucial opportunity for the Steelers to secure a potential long-term franchise quarterback, a reported organizational goal. While the Steelers could also address this need in next year's draft, Rodgers' ongoing indecision could significantly impact their draft strategy, even if the front office maintains a composed demeanor.
