The Pittsburgh Steelers recently traded wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for future draft picks, creating a noticeable gap in their wide receiver corps. With Pickens gone, the team now has a clear need to add to their receiving group, similar to last offseason. Fortunately, there are still several free agent wide receivers available on the market who could be a strong fit within the Steelers’ offensive system.

Steelers insider Mike DeFabo from The Athletic recently published an article discussing all things Steelers from the busy offseason. DeFabo mentioned multiple wide receivers, and why they could potentially fit into the Steelers' offense.

The first player he mentions is Gabe Davis, who was recently released from the Jacksonville Jaguars

"Similar to last year with Russell Wilson, Davis could sign for far less and the Jags [Jacksonville Jaguars] would pay most of his salary," DeFabo wrote.

Davis could be a financially smart option, especially considering that one of the likely motivations behind the Pickens trade was the looming cost of his next contract. With the Steelers facing several upcoming financial commitments to other key players, adding a cost-effective wide receiver could provide significant value to the team.

The next player DeFabo highlighted was Amari Cooper, a free agent who most recently played for the Buffalo Bills. His underwhelming performance last season has raised some concerns for DeFabo regarding his potential impact.

"It's concerning he wasn't more productive with Josh Allen," DeFabo said.

Cooper is a seasoned veteran, widely recognized for his precise route running and strong presence in the locker room. It’s possible that his down year was simply the result of not fitting well within the Bills' offensive scheme.

The next player DeFabo mentioned was Keenan Allen, who is now a free agent after spending a season with the Chicago Bears. However, Allen is not new to the league, as he is a seasoned veteran. Allen also brings both physical strength and excellent route-running skills, which are qualities DeFabo believes could be a valuable addition to the Steelers' offense.

"Maybe a big body would fit in Arthur Smith’s offense," DeFabo explained.

During the 2025 NFL Draft, Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith expressed his vision for building an explosive and dynamic offense. Given Allen’s proven ability as a reliable route-runner and physical receiver, he could be a natural fit within the type of high-powered offense Smith is aiming to create.

DeFabo also then pointed to another veteran known for his exceptional route-running ability, Odell Beckham Jr., a player with a proven track record and big-play potential. It also seems that the Steelers' top quarterback target, Aaron Rodgers, has a strong interest in playing alongside Beckham Jr.

"Rodgers reportedly was interested in adding Beckham to the [New York] Jets," DeFabo shared.

At 32 years old, Beckham Jr. has endured several significant injuries over the course of his career. While he was a breakout star early on, those injuries have limited his ability to consistently perform at a high level in recent seasons. However, if he can remain healthy, Beckham Jr. has the potential to be a valuable addition, and likely at a more affordable price point.

Steelers Joey Porter Jr

The final two players DeFabo brought up were Tyler Boyd and Nelson Agholor, both of whom are coming off lackluster seasons. However, it’s evident that the Steelers’ main focus is on wide receiver DK Metcalf, whom they acquired from the Seattle Seahawks in a trade. The team solidified their confidence in the veteran by signing him to a five-year, $150 million contract.

Steelers Have Yet To Secure A Reliable Starting Quarterback

It’s no secret that the Steelers are considered the favorites to land Rodgers. They have already extended an offer and are now awaiting his decision. However, Rodgers' choice may be influenced by the loss of a key receiving target (although some believe the trade had no effect on Rodgers' overall decision). Regardless, it’s crucial for the Steelers to add another weapon to their offense. Reports indicate that Pittsburgh isn’t done making moves yet, which keeps the door open for the Steelers to explore the wide receiver options DeFabo mentioned.
