One of the most significant gaps on the Steelers' roster is at the wide receiver position, and Roman Wilson is eager to seize the opportunity. During recent offseason workouts, Wilson addressed the media, outlining some of his personal goals as he aims to make an impact in filling that gap. Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently highlighted Wilson’s message in an article, shedding light on the young receiver’s mindset and ambitions.
"My goals for the season are to get better every single day, treat every day like it’s game day and come prepared with questions to ask after practice," Wilson said. "Be mentally and physically locked in and give it my all every single day so I can get better and be ready for whenever my time is."
Wilson, the Steelers' third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is poised to make a significant impact in the 2025 season. After a rookie year hampered by injuries, including an ankle injury during the first padded practice of training camp and a hamstring issue following that, that limited him to just five offensive snaps. Wilson is now fully healthy and eager to contribute.
With the Steelers' wide receiver corps undergoing significant changes, including the trade of George Pickens and the acquisition of veteran DK Metcalf, Wilson has a prime opportunity to step up. Reports from these offseason programs indicate that Wilson has returned with a stronger physique and a determined mindset, aiming to secure a significant role in the offense. As the Steelers prepare for the upcoming season, Wilson's development and performance could be crucial in shaping the team's receiving scheme.

After the headline-grabbing trade of Pickens, Metcalf has solidified his spot as the Steelers' unquestioned number one wide receiver. Many fans had hoped to see Pickens and Metcalf line up together, seeing a dynamic duo fueled by their intensity and complementary playing styles. However, with Pickens gone, the focus has now shifted to identifying who will emerge as Metcalf’s counterpart on the opposite side of the field.
In today’s NFL, having multiple strong wide receivers is crucial to a team’s offensive success. Defenses are faster and more complex than ever, often focusing on shutting down a team’s top playmaker. By having multiple reliable receiving options, an offense can spread the field, force mismatches, and keep defenses guessing. A strong receiving corps not only opens up the passing game, but also helps the run game by preventing defenses from stacking the box.
For some time before Pickens was traded, fans were eagerly hoping to find a strong second receiver to line up alongside him. During the brief window when both Pickens and Metcalf were on the Steelers’ roster, excitement grew as many believed the team had finally assembled a dynamic receiving duo. However, following Pickens' departure, some fans feel the Steelers are almost back to the drawing board.
Steelers May Find Their Wide Receiver Replacement Within The Current Roster
One key observation fans made following the trade of Pickens is that the Steelers chose not to address the wide receiver position during the 2025 NFL Draft days prior. Despite this, the team does have a few wide receiver options already on the roster, players they’ve recently invested in and could look to develop into key contributors. Wilson is one of those players who genuinely has the potential to rise into a more prominent role.

That’s one of the key reasons why these offseason activities hold so much value. While there’s ongoing speculation about the Steelers possibly adding a veteran wide receiver, the players already on the roster are getting crucial reps and a real chance to prove themselves. As the regular season approaches, it will be interesting to see which receiver emerges to line up alongside Metcalf.
