As the Pittsburgh Steelers navigate the early stages of the 2025 offseason, the quarterback position remains a focal point of discussion. With veteran Aaron Rodgers yet to commit to the team and other options being considered, Mason Rudolph has emerged as the current front-runner during Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

Recently, the Steelers released a Week 1 Sideline Report of OTAs. In this video, Mike Prisuta stated how Rudolph has impressed.

“Really impressed with Mason Rudolph in terms of how calm he is," Prisuta said. "How he understands that right now it’s about him and he can’t do anything about other than him.”

Prisuta’s observation underscores Rudolph’s composed and mature demeanor amidst the swirling speculation surrounding the Steelers’ quarterback situation. In an environment where competition is fierce and media narratives can create distraction, Rudolph has remained unfazed, demonstrating a clear commitment to self-improvement and quiet leadership.

His steady focus and calm presence have been evident as he takes the helm during OTAs, embracing the responsibilities that come with increased reps and visibility. This succinct but telling statement from Prisuta highlights Rudolph’s current standing within the team—not just as a backup or placeholder, but as a player earning respect through consistency and resilience.

“Right now he’s QB1,” Prisuta stated.

Despite the external uncertainties, shifting depth chart conversations, and pressure from fans and analysts alike, Rudolph is making the most of his opportunity. He’s using this offseason to solidify his command of the offense, strengthen relationships with teammates, and showcase the kind of poise coaches value in a leader.

His actions on the field speak volumes, suggesting that regardless of where he ends up on the roster come Week 1, he’s intent on proving he belongs and can contribute meaningfully to the team’s success.

“I just really like the way he’s handled himself," Prisuta said. "It has reminded me of the end of the 2023 season. Did he not just kind of seamlessly step in? It had been awhile since we saw him get an extended look at it and he just took over like he’d been doing it all along and he’s been fun to watch out here - no question.”

Prisuta drew parallels between Rudolph’s current performance and his impactful return in late 2023, emphasizing his ability to adapt and lead effectively when called upon.

The Steelers’ quarterback room has undergone significant changes, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields departing during the offseason. Currently, the team has Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and rookie Will Howard on the roster. Rudolph’s experience and familiarity with the team’s system position him as a reliable option. In March 2025, Rudolph signed a two-year, $8 million deal to return to Pittsburgh, providing stability amid the ongoing search for a long-term solution .

While the team has shown interest in acquiring Rodgers, his absence from OTAs has raised concerns about his commitment. Additionally, internal discussions have considered other veteran options, such as Kirk Cousins, should Rodgers decide against joining the team.

Under the guidance of Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith, the Steelers are aiming to establish a cohesive and effective offensive unit. Rudolph’s calm leadership and understanding of the team’s dynamics are valuable assets during this transitional period. His ability to seamlessly integrate into the offense provides a sense of continuity and reliability.

The team’s approach emphasizes the development of a sustainable offensive strategy, with Rudolph’s performance during OTAs serving as a foundation for future planning. While the pursuit of a high-profile quarterback continues, Rudolph’s presence ensures that the team maintains a steady course.
