Giants Get Strong Advice To Steal Steelers' Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers have once again turned a strong start to the season into a brutal collapse. It has been a colossal failure from Head Coach Mike Tomlin in the 2025 season, and much of it comes down to what is happening, or not happening, at halftime of games. Even his former quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, could not stay silent any longer about the lack of halftime adjustments, or if they are even being made, the fact that they clearly are not good enough. Too many times, this Steelers team has been outcoached, and that is simply not acceptable for a coach of Tomlin’s experience.

Steelers retired quarterback Ben Roethlisberger visits his former team and Head Coach Mike Tomlin at a team practice just before the 2023 season at the UPMC Sports Complex in Pittsburgh, PA.

Tomlin is no rookie. While he has never had a losing season, he also has not won a playoff game since the 2016 season. The contrast between regular-season success and postseason failures is becoming impossible to ignore, especially as the team continues to struggle in situations where halftime adjustments should make a difference. Fans and analysts alike are starting to question whether Tomlin’s methods are outdated and whether the Steelers can afford to keep going down the same path.

Despite the growing calls for change, the Steelers historically do not fire head coaches. They have had only three head coaches since 1969. Still, the conversation is not going away. Even during the Monday Night Football pregame show, NFL pundit Marcus Spears offered advice to the New York Giants about their next chapter. Spears believes that if Tomlin were fired or became available from Pittsburgh, the Giants would need to hire him.

"If the Pittsburgh Steelers are moving away from Mike Tomlin, Joe Schoen should hire Mike Tomlin to be the head coach for the New York Giants," Spears said during the Monday Night Football countdown.

That is not necessarily a hot take from Spears, as this has been the longstanding debate over why the Steelers cannot fire Tomlin. This is what every pundit in the national media has said in favor of keeping him. However, lately, the narrative does appear to be starting to shift. Even Tomlin’s greatest supporters seem to truly believe, even if they will not admit it, that he has not been a great head coach for quite some time and may need a change of scenery.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Could "OK" A Trade To The New York Giants

Many have suggested that the Steelers should trade Tomlin to the Giants or another team in need of his leadership. Tomlin does have a no-trade clause in his contract, which is a provision in professional sports that requires a player or a coach to give consent before they can be traded to another team.

Here’s the thing: Tomlin may feel like he cannot help the Steelers anymore. Maybe he thinks about what happened with Andy Reid and truly wants to turn around the Giants. You never know in professional sports, though it does seem pretty out of reach. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 season. How much longer can that continue?

Even though the Steelers don’t historically fire head coaches, what do you think the chances are that they would fire Tomlin after the 2025 season? What would truly have to happen, in your opinion?
