Steelers Cleared To Reunite Aaron Rodgers With Another Great Teammate Now

The Pittsburgh Steelers have moved to 8-6 on the 2025 season after beating the Miami Dolphins at home on Monday night. Now, the Steelers are getting ready to try and finish the season strong with three more regular season games to go. Pittsburgh has its eyes firmly set on the playoffs, currently sitting in first place in the AFC North, but the job is far from finished. For this team, simply getting into the postseason will not be enough. The Steelers need a playoff win to quiet the growing noise from fans surrounding Head Coach Mike Tomlin and the franchise’s recent postseason frustrations.

During the win over the Dolphins, one of Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ touchdown passes went to a very familiar face. Former teammate Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who was just added to the practice squad and elevated for the Week 15 contest, made his presence felt in a big way. Valdes-Scantling caught one pass for 19 yards, but it went for a critical touchdown that helped swing momentum. It was a significant moment for both Rodgers and the offense, showing how valuable trust and chemistry can be late in the season.

Now, more good news could be on the way for Rodgers and this Steelers offense. Former Green Bay Packers and New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard cleared waivers on Wednesday, officially making him a free agent. According to Mike Florio, there is legitimate buzz around the possibility of Lazard joining Pittsburgh for the remainder of the 2025 season. If that move comes together, it would give Rodgers yet another weapon he is extremely familiar with, potentially strengthening an offense that is clearly gearing up for a deep playoff push.

"Allen Lazard is free to reunite with Aaron Rodgers," Florio said. "If the Steelers want him. And if he wants the Steelers. The former Packers and Jets receiver cleared waivers on Wednesday, making him a free agent. Because Lazard didn’t waive his right to termination pay in order to secure his release, Lazard will be entitled to recover the remaining $291,667 of his $1.75 million base salary from the Jets. He’ll also be able to keep whatever he makes elsewhere, without offset."

Florio’s point ultimately boils down to opportunity and leverage on both sides. Lazard is no longer tied to the Jets in any meaningful way, and because he protected his termination pay, he can collect the remainder of his salary while still signing elsewhere with no financial penalty.

That makes a reunion with Rodgers not only possible, but practical. If the Steelers have interest and Lazard is open to Pittsburgh, there are no contractual hurdles standing in the way of a deal coming together quickly.

Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Clearly Has Strong Chemistry With Allen Lazard

From a football standpoint, the appeal is obvious. Lazard was still productive with Rodgers as recently as the 2024 season, hauling in 37 receptions for 530 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Those numbers matter, but the chemistry matters even more. Rodgers has always valued timing, trust, and reliability at the wide receiver position, and Lazard has consistently checked those boxes when playing alongside him. That familiarity can be especially valuable late in the season, when learning a brand-new system isn’t always realistic.

For the Steelers, this would be less about making a splash and more about strengthening the foundation of the offense heading into the postseason. Pittsburgh could use all the depth it can get at wide receiver, particularly from someone who already knows how to win with the quarterback under center. If the goal is to give Rodgers every possible chance to succeed and make noise in January, adding a trusted, proven option like Lazard would be a logical and low-risk move to close the season.
