The Pittsburgh Steelers may be celebrating Christmas like the rest of us, but they still have work to do in preparing for a potentially crucial Week 17 contest. That includes the front office as well, especially since there are so many injuries popping up for Pittsburgh. Everyone has to make sure there is enough depth to go out there and win a key game to take home the AFC North. Christmas dinner can wait, as not everyone unfortunately can take Thursday off to celebrate the holidays with their families all day long.

General Manager Omar Khan is still hard at work. On Christmas day, it was announced that the Steelers signed cornerback Tre Flowers to the 53-man roster to help out with the depth in the secondary.

Flowers is a versatile cornerback that has become a special teams ace in recent years as well. He has become a journeyman in recent years, as he is now on his seventh NFL team. When a team is in a pickle, they seem to look for guys like Flowers. This most likely will not be a long-term situation. He will get some snaps to help out wherever he is needed, then he will be on to his next team for 2026.

Flowers has not started a game since 2023, but he has made numerous appearances in NFL games, which include two games for the Detroit Lions in 2025. Their secondary has been beat up all season long, so they brought him in to help fill in and be a part of what has been dubbed "The Legion of Whom." He did not play much, but he still did his part in not allowing a pass to go in his general direction.

Steelers' Reason For Signing Flowers Is Very Clear

The Steelers' suddenly great cornerback room has fallen due to injuries. The status of Brandin Echols and James Pierre are very uncertain at this point, and their odds of playing are not high in Week 17. Both of them were expected to be backups all year, but they have absolutely thrived as starters. Pittsburgh just needs able bodies that can do a job, as replacing both injured cornerbacks will be a tough task. The fact that Flowers was signed to the 53-man roster shows how bad the team needs depth.
