The Pittsburgh Steelers’ long-time head coach, Mike Tomlin, elected to walk away from the team after the 2025 season. The demands of coaching in the NFL had become too much for him, and he admitted the organization needed a fresh voice after nearly two decades of his tremendous leadership.

Many Steelers fans are curious about what the future will look like under new leadership, and the team has wasted no time beginning the search for its next head coach. Interviews for candidates are already being requested, signaling that the organization wants to move quickly and decisively. There's also the chance that Tomlin may even help find the next head coach.

Another massive decision revolves around the assistant coaches. On Thursday, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac revealed information about what will happen to every remaining coach on the staff now that Tomlin is stepping away. Sources indicate that all assistant coaches have been informed they are free to explore other opportunities and will not be automatically retained unless the incoming head coach chooses to rehire them.

"The Steelers have told all of Mike Tomlin’s assistant coaches they are free to pursue other opportunities and won’t be retained unless the new head coach wants to rehire them, per multiple sources," Dulac said. "All coaches are under contract through the end of February."

This move allows the new leader full control over the coaching staff, giving them the ability to build a team that aligns with their vision. Steelers fans now wait with anticipation, knowing that both the head coaching position and the future of the staff will shape the team’s next chapter.

After Tomlin decided to step away, it was clear that many changes would be coming. This isn’t very surprising, and it seems like the most prudent move for the organization.

Now, the Steelers are truly entering a completely new era. The new head coach, whoever that may be, will have the opportunity to decide whether to rehire any members of the current staff. However, it seems unlikely that many coaches from this staff will remain. Of course, anything could happen, and more details will emerge once Steelers fans learn who the next head coach will be.

Steelers' Next Few Weeks Are Going To Alter The Franchise Forever

As the Steelers move forward, the coming weeks will be critical in shaping the direction of the franchise. With a head coaching search underway and major decisions looming about the rest of the coaching staff, the organization has a rare opportunity to reset its identity and long-term vision.

Fans will be watching closely to see which candidates emerge as serious contenders and what philosophy the next leader brings to Pittsburgh. While uncertainty always brings questions, it also brings excitement and possibility. One era has closed, but another is about to begin, and the choices made during this transition could define the Steelers for years to come.

Fans aren’t only focused on the coaching staff. Many are also wondering what this transition means for the players. Star pass rusher TJ Watt recently signed a massive extension and was reportedly devastated by Tomlin’s departure, adding another emotional layer to an already uncertain offseason.
