The Pittsburgh Steelers have always focused on the defensive side of the ball. That is why no one has been surprised that a bulk of their initial candidates for the current vacant head-coaching position are recognized as rising minds for defense. The organization also loves any kind of NFL lineage, which could be one of the main reasons that Chris Shula has been connected to the franchise since Mike Tomlin stepped down on Tuesday. In an offensive-driven league, however, fans may be hoping that the front office breaks the mold and goes after a young offensive genius that could be a home run hire.

Nathan Scheelhaase of the Los Angeles Rams was the only known offensive-mind that the Steelers had put in a request to interview as of Thursday evening. That has finally changed, after it was reported by The Athletic's Dianna Russini that the franchise is now going after the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree. San Francisco 49ers Offensive Coordinator Klay Kubiak is officially in the mix for the Steelers.

Kubiak is just 37 years old and has a father that coached in the NFL for a long time. Additionally, his brother currently works as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. Fans should not be surprised if the Steelers also put in a request in for him, too. Overall, it is good to see that the decision-making group is starting to get more involved with offensive minds.
Anyone who coaches under Shanahan or McVay should be considered top-tier candidates. Both of them have been incredibly successful while also molding several younger coaches into stars. Kubiak has been with Shanahan since 2021, which is plenty of time to learn and grow as a play-caller. It surely is an intriguing upcoming interview for the Steelers.
After just one season as the 49ers' offensive coordinator, Kubiak could be ready for the big jump. While Shanahan undoubtedly calls the plays for San Francisco, Kubiak has been his right-hand man in 2025.
Pittsburgh is going to cast a wide net of searches when it comes to this head coach. When an organization has the sense of loyalty that the Steelers do, it only makes sense to leave no stone left unturned. Kubiak may be young and only in his first year with the offensive coordinator title, but he could be that diamond in the rough that the organization is looking for.

Steelers Team President Art Rooney II roams the sidelines as the team warms up and gets ready to compete in a 2022 preseason matchup at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA.
Art Rooney II is under a lot of pressure to deliver, which is why some of the biggest assistants in the game are already getting requests to come interview for the job. It will be desirable, given the fact that the team has only had three head coaches since 1969. There is no doubt that stability will be something to sell on if the front office loves a candidate.
Steelers Also Express Interest In Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator
Jeff Hafley is another name that came up in regards to Pittsburgh's head-coaching search. The Green Bay Packers' current leader on defense will find himself in a position to lead the Black and Gold at just 46 years of age. It's not a coincidence that the Steelers are focusing on younger names, as the individual could be expected to be around for decades. Hafley should be interviewing on Friday after a request was made by the franchise to speak with him.
