Ben Roethlisberger Gives Steelers Fans Severe Wake Up Call: “Scratching My Head”

The Pittsburgh Steelers made it clear which direction their next era was going to go in when they decided to hire Mike McCarthy. The franchise hasn’t seen a coaching change in a long time, but when Mike Tomlin elected to walk away from coaching, it became obvious that a new chapter was about to unfold in Pittsburgh. McCarthy was officially introduced to the city during his first press conference in the Steel City on Tuesday, where he appeared both emotional and energized about the opportunity ahead.

During that introductory media session, McCarthy made it clear that he didn’t come to Pittsburgh for a quiet transition period. He emphasized his commitment to restoring the Steelers to championship contention and openly discussed his desire to end the team’s playoff drought. His passion resonated with some fans, but the hire has still sparked debate across Steeler Nation. Many supporters were hoping the organization would pursue a younger, up-and-coming head coach rather than someone with McCarthy’s experience and age.

Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who of course played the majority of his career under Tomlin, weighed in on the situation during Tuesday’s episode of his podcast Footbahlin. Roethlisberger expressed surprise at the skepticism surrounding McCarthy, saying he “scratched his head” at the reaction from fans questioning the move. From his perspective, McCarthy’s résumé, leadership, and offensive mindset make him a strong fit for a team looking to reestablish its identity and return to consistent playoff success.

"I am sitting there scratching my head at some of the people that are saying this," Roethlisberger said. "I believe it's a great hire. We finally have an offensive-minded head coach in here... I am so excited for an offensive-minded coach because I think we have to score more than six points in a playoff game. Ok, I know people want defense and this stuff and all of that, but here's what I hope he does... I think he will do this. He should lean toward the offensive side. I hope he hires a young-gun offensive coordinator."

The Steelers’ former head coach was clearly a defensive-minded, grind-it-out leader, and for the most part, that approach worked in Pittsburgh. Especially during the regular season. Tomlin compiled a regular-season record of 193–114–2 (.628 winning percentage), which is extremely impressive in the NFL, and he never posted a losing season. 

The only real criticism is that his playoff success came early in his tenure. From the 2016 season onward, Tomlin’s teams were largely disappointments in the postseason.

McCarthy has faced a similar narrative during his time coaching the Dallas Cowboys. However, he did begin his tenure with three straight 12-win seasons, which often gets overlooked. Hearing Roethlisberger speak positively about the hire should be encouraging for Steelers fans. 

He understands what it takes to win in the NFL and has stayed connected to the game through his podcast and as a fan. His perspective carries real weight, and he has made it clear that he’s puzzled by why some fans and pundits are so critical of the McCarthy hire. 

The hire can be debated, but the facts cannot. McCarthy is a Super Bowl champion and he got it over Tomlin. Now he's going to try and get one in the Steel City. Ultimately, the Steelers organization appears committed to blending tradition with innovation, trusting McCarthy’s experience can stabilize the locker room and accelerate the team forward at the same time.
