Steelers' Potential Free Agent WR Target Has No Interest In Playing For New Team: "I Would Like To Stay"

The 2026 offseason is in full gear for the Pittsburgh Steelers as the team navigates a new era under Head Coach Mike McCarthy. There are likely to be plenty of changes to the roster, but the collective is not going to commit to a rebuild. There is a lot of money invested in the defense, and while no one is quite sure who will return, the majority of impact players should still be around come Organized Team Activities (OTAs). The bigger challenge may be rounding out an offense that remained stagnant at times in 2025, especially because there is currently no known plan for the quarterback position.

Steelers Head Coach Mike McCarthy looks out toward the media during his opening press conference on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 which was held at Acrisure Stadium.

If Aaron Rodgers returns, the front office will spend in a way that suggests the organization wants to win immediately. A 42-year-old coming back for another chance at a playoff run is not going to give it one more shot if investments won't be made. The most complicated situation right now for the Steelers, aside from figuring out who will be under center, is getting more weapons for the passing game.

Pittsburgh could absolutely take multiple wide receivers during the 2026 NFL Draft; however, free agency is also an area where that could become a focus. A name that stands out is Rodgers' former teammate in Romeo Doubs, who is a soon-to-be free agent after four years with the Green Bay Packers. The wideout recently joined James Harrison and Joe Haden on their podcast, Deebo & Joe, and he made it clear that he doesn't want to leave the land of the Cheeseheads.

"Man, I would love to be in Green Bay, bro," Doubs said. "I just think it's how prestigious they are [and] how they go about things. The discipline, the structure, that's something that I would really want to be a part of."

It genuinely sounded like Doubs didn't want to leave Green Bay. The Steelers' organization is also looked at as prestigious and historic, but that doesn't seem to matter as of now to the pass-catcher.

"The options are open, but if I had to choose bro, I would like to stay in Green Bay," Doubs noted.

While Doubs may have this preference currently, the Steel City could be a much more attractive option for him. Signing him wouldn't prevent Pittsburgh from drafting a wide receiver or two, but it would give Doubs the opportunity to solidify himself as a clear-cut number two option. Additionally, he could potentially reunite with Rodgers, as the two played together in 2022.

The Steelers don't really have a plan at wide receiver outside of DK Metcalf, so all options are on the table for the franchise. A significant signing in free agency could occur, and then the team may also take a pass-catcher in the first or second round. With a new offensive-minded head coach in McCarthy โ€” who has always loved spreading the wealth โ€” additions of Doubs and young rookies would be a fantastic approach.

Regardless of who is playing quarterback, there needs to be more consistent threats in the passing game outside of Metcalf. This is why Doubs has been linked to the Steelers. Unfortunately, he seems like he is currently locked in on remaining with the Packers, which could be a challenge when and if Pittsburgh reaches out to talk about a possible deal.

Steelers Are Hoping For Offensive Resurgence With McCarthy

Pittsburgh has had arguably one of the most inconsistent offenses in the entire NFL for several seasons now. The team decided to bring in McCarthy, who is recognized as a great play-caller. It shouldn't come as a surprise if he wants to retool the offense a bit, and adding more playmakers is a good way to do that. Fans should still keep Doubs' name in mind, because the feeling from the Packers may not be mutual.
