The Pittsburgh Steelers have recently had the most organizational shakeup its experienced in 19 years. Former head coach Mike Tomlin decided to step down following the 2025 season, which was reported the day after his team was eliminated from the postseason. The organization immediately conducted a head coaching search to find the team's fifth head coach in the last 60 years, and the franchise landed on Mike McCarthy. This bucked a lot of trends that the franchise has followed in hiring a head coach, as McCarthy is older and an offensive-minded leader.

The hiring of McCarthy has not initially been a popular decision. A lot of fans wanted the organization to go in a younger direction, but the franchise wound up hiring a coach that is older than Tomlin. McCarthy has a ton of experience, and he has won at the highest level. This move shows that Pittsburgh is still trying to win now, and the organization also pointed to McCarthy's ability to develop the quarterback position as a reason for his hiring.
Immediately following the hire, fans connected the dots that hiring McCarthy might be some sort of rouse to lure Aaron Rodgers back to Pittsburgh as the four-time league MVP considers retirement. Mike DeFabo of The Athletic joined Scoop City on Thursday where he shared that the organization is cognizant of this narrative, and it is trying to put it to bed.
"Well I mean, the Steelers have tried to make it abundantly clear that they did not hire Mike McCarty to entice Aaron Rodgers," DeFabo said. "They told Dianna [Russini] that, they told me that. They made that very explicitly clear because I think that they are concerned about that narrative that you could easily put together. Ultimately, the reason why they brought in Mike McCarthy is his track record working with quarterbacks."
It was easy to connect the dots between Rodgers and McCarthy as the duo won a Super Bowl together while they were both with the Green Bay Packers. McCarthy has been Rodgers' head coach for the majority of his career, and the two might be adding another year under their belts in 2026.

All of the decision makers in Pittsburgh have spoken on the hiring of McCarthy, and Art Rooney II and Omar Khan have made it abundantly clear that the hire had nothing to do with Rodgers. The organization does not want fans or others around the league thinking that was a part of the reasoning behind the hire.
The Steelers set themselves up to be scrutinized for bringing in McCarthy, with the Rodgers connection being the main reason. The hiring was about the quarterback position, but it was more about finding and identifying the next franchise quarterback while putting in the work to develop whoever that player might end up being.
Steelers And Aaron Rodgers Seem Likely To Reconnect
Rodgers is one of the more difficult players to read when it comes to trying to figure out what he is going to do. He keeps his circle small, which is why it is hard to believe anything that is reported in the media when it comes to the veteran quarterback. However, Pittsburgh should be getting a decision from the signal-caller before the start of free agency, and it seems like him coming back to Pittsburgh is a real possibility.

On the off chance that Rodgers does not return, McCarthy has made his excitement for young quarterback Will Howard very clear. The new head coach seems excited to have the chance to develop Howard. It is a longshot that Howard becomes the next franchise quarterback in Pittsburgh, but McCarthy gives him the best chance to become that kind of player.
