The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to host the 2026 NFL Draft in the Steel City, marking the first time in NFL history that Pittsburgh has welcomed the event. The city is buzzing with excitement, and it’s not just the draft generating energy. Fans, media, and local businesses are all gearing up for a historic week. Streets will be filled with fans, while the downtown area prepares for an influx of visitors. The draft represents a new chapter for the team, the city, and its passionate fan base, signaling both opportunity and renewal for Pittsburgh football culture. A new era begins with Mike McCarthy at the helm of the Steelers.

The Steelers need to get better at wide receiver and this draft, they are expected to select a handful of them. Among the top wide receiver prospects is USC standout Makai Lemon. The Steelers have been closely connected to Lemon, though he could be selected before Pittsburgh picks at No. 21 overall. During the combine, however, a horrific update regarding Lemon surfaced, sending shockwaves through the football world.

While initially concerning, the information might work to Pittsburgh’s advantage if it causes his stock to fall into their draft range. Former Steelers defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko recently revealed a troubling conversation he had with a scout about Lemon. The feedback was far from positive, yet the potential upside remains significant for the Steelers’ plans.

"I talked to a scout just now who said he didn’t know what Makai Lemon’s motive was behind his combine interviews, but whoever advised the kid needs to be fired," Fehoko said. "'Absolutely bombed it,' word for word."

McCarthy is tasked with restoring Pittsburgh to Super Bowl contention, and he faces high expectations in his first full draft cycle. The challenges are steep, as the team needs to balance immediate roster needs with long-term strategic planning. McCarthy has expressed confidence that he can turn the program around, but the pressure is undeniable. One way to get the pressure off his back may be to find a way to draft Lemon.

Steelers' Omar Khan

Fans hope his leadership and experience can guide the team back to championship relevance. Every move in the draft, every roster decision, will be scrutinized as Pittsburgh seeks to reclaim its spot among NFL elite franchises. To make meaningful progress, McCarthy and General Manager Omar Khan must execute a near-perfect draft.

The Steelers enter 2026 with 12 picks, including five within the top 100 selections, providing rare flexibility to address multiple needs. A top priority remains solving the wide receiver problem, which has persisted for seasons.

Analysts believe Pittsburgh could add more than one playmaker in the first three rounds. This year’s draft class offers ample opportunities to do so. Smart drafting could reshape the offense and support the team’s championship ambitions, making this draft potentially one of the most important in recent Steelers history.

Steelers Sort Of Got Good News If They Want To Draft Lemon

Here’s the thing regarding the horrific news, it could actually work in Pittsburgh’s favor. Depending on how the draft shakes out, some analysts believe Lemon could go in the top 10. If his combine interviews really went as poorly as reported, it might improve the Steelers’ chances of getting him at No. 21.

Lemon is clearly an incredible talent, having recorded 79 catches for 1,156 yards and 11 touchdowns in his 2025 season with the Trojans. Combine interviews can be revealing, but they can also be misleading or misunderstood. Pittsburgh has taken calculated risks on receivers before, like George Pickens, making this potentially good news should Khan and McCarthy like Lemon. Steelers fans and NFL fans will of course have their focus on what happens with Lemon following the combine.
