Steelers May Seriously Benefit From "Misconstrued" Character Concerns Around Big-Time Wide Receiver Prospect

It is no secret that Omar Khan and the Pittsburgh Steelers will be deep in the wide receiver market, both in free agency and the draft. They only have three players at that position (besides those on a futures deal) that are under contract for the 2026 season. There will be a lot of new faces in that room, and it will likely take a lot of time for them to mesh well together no matter who the starting quarterback will be. Pittsburgh refuses to tank, but the upcoming season could be full of growing pains.

Steelers' Calvin Austin III runs alongside DK Metcalf at Phase One of voluntary offseason workouts in 2025.

One of those options would be USC Trojans wide receiver Makai Lemon, although reports say that he flunked his NFL Combine interviews. His press conference went viral for his odd mannerisms as well, and he is now being flagged for character concerns by multiple teams. Who knows if the Steelers will pull him off their board or not, like many other teams seem to have.

While making an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, draft insider Ryan Wilson was asked about the unusual buzz around Lemon. He thinks it's nothing to worry about, and if he is right, maybe the Steelers could benefit from him falling in the draft.

"[Makai Lemon] is quiet, he's introverted, he's extremely focused on football," Wilson said. "Bryant McFadden has described liking teammates who, 'Eat pencils,' and I think Makai Lemon would fall in the category of a, 'Pencil eater,' in terms of just a guy that's all about running through brick walls and running over people that are in front of him that are trying to keep him out of the end zone."

Lemon was expected to be one of the top three wide receivers taken in the draft for that "pencil-eating" way of being hyper-focused on what he needs to do and making all kinds of big plays. That's why so many scouts loved him before his seemingly disastrous Scouting Combine phase. It's still to be determined exactly how much his interviews and press conference hurt his stock, but we will see for sure soon enough.

Wilson continued on and explained his take on the negative reports about Lemon's behavior at the 2026 Scouting Combine.

"I think that maybe has been misconstrued -- is the word I'll use. We'll see if that turns out to be true -- but I think that has been misconstrued as aloof or standoffish or he's not interested in what you have to say," Wilson explained. "I think it's more about he can be a little shy in terms of those sorts of settings and he's also laser-focused on football, which I'm okay with. I have no issue with guys that are good dudes, good teammates, and just want to play ball and don't necessarily want to engage in all the other stuff."

There are definitely some people in the world that get extremely uncomfortable in social situations, and that could have been the case for Lemon. Maybe he just wanted to hurry up and get those Combine interviews over with. Either way, Wilson sees it as a non-issue, but if other teams do, he could fall right into the Steelers' lap. At the very least, they may not have to trade up nearly as far to go get him.

Steelers May Give Lemon A Second Chance

Not every team does Top 30 visits anymore, but the Steelers still do. Whether they have Lemon visit or not will show how they feel about his issues with the Combine. However, Lemon's agent has likely told him about what everyone is saying about him and may be helping him be better for the draft process. He could impress Pittsburgh with his second try and undo the negativity coming from the past week.

What do you think about Lemon's questionable behavior at the Scouting Combine being a non-factor, as well as the Steelers benefitting from the negative press around him? Let us know in the comments or on at @Steelers_ChrisB.
