The Pittsburgh Steelers are patiently waiting for a decision from quarterback Aaron Rodgers on whether or not he intends to continue his playing career. The four-time league MVP is scheduled to become a free agent, but the expectation is that he would come back to the Steelers if he decides he wants to continue playing. Pittsburgh's quarterback situation is very much up in the air as Rodgers continues to think about his future, which is par for the course based on the last several offseasons. Rodgers played well in 2025, and the organization would welcome him back for the 2026 season.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan looks on as the team sets up in front of fans to work out at the annual Friday Night Lights training camp practice in Latrobe, PA.

The organization has gone through a ton of change during the 2026 offseason as former head coach Mike Tomlin decided to step down from his role with the franchise. Mike McCarthy was then hired after a thorough coaching search, and it just so happens that he was Rodgers' coach for the majority of the quarterback's career. Many fans want to see a reunion between the two after the duo won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, and he spoke about Pittsburgh's hiring of McCarthy while defending his former head coach following some of the negative coverage of the hiring.

"I saw some of the stuff get written about Mike," Rodgers said. "I just think, one, he doesn't give a sh*t about that. Two, the majority of it is bullsh*t, any negative stuff about Mike. I don't give a sh*t how old he is, how long he has been in the league, or the trend of the new, young play-caller who has been on the staff of one of the [Kyle] Shanahan disciples. There's something to an old school organization, which the Pittsburgh Steelers definitely are, and bringing in a guy who brings accountability and a program that's proven to work at multiple places now. He's a f*cking Yinzer."

McCarthy definitely was not a popular hire at first as most fans wanted a younger guy to earn the role. However, he brings an offensive philosophy to an organization that desperately needs it. Rodgers had nothing but good things to say about his former head coach, even though some in the media have wondered if the two have a good relationship.

McCarthy coached Rodgers throughout most of the quarterback's career, and the two had tremendous success with one another. They won a Super Bowl and made several other deep playoff runs. Their time together didn't end great and many have suspected that the two's relationship was rocky, but Rodgers spoke glowingly of the new head coach of the Steelers.

"Mike's one of the great guys in the league," Rodgers said. "Just an absolutely exceptional human being with a huge heart. We had a lot of great years together, a lot of fun. He really cares about the players, but he also holds guys accountable and creates a lot of structure and detail in the process. I loved my time with Mike over the years, obviously there's some times, like a big brother. Sometimes you love him, sometimes you're pissed at him. But deep down, there's so much love for Mike and appreciation for the time we spent together."

Any suspicion of the status on the relationship between Rodgers and McCarthy should be put to bed after Rodgers' comments. It sounds like he would be open to the idea of playing for McCarthy again, and the door is open for that to happen in Pittsburgh in 2026.

Steelers Should Get A Decision From Aaron Rodgers Soon

Rodgers has not made any decision on his future, but various people from the organization have spoken out and stated that they do not expect the process to drag out as long as it did during the 2025 season. Ideally the Steelers will get a decision from Rodgers before free agency begins and the franchise goes any deeper on draft preparation, but it is hard to have any certainty with Rodgers.
