The Pittsburgh Steelers and the rest of the NFL is gearing up for the free agency window to officially begin on Wednesday, but the legal tampering window officially began on Monday at noon. Players started flying off the board as two sides are allowed to verbally agree to deals, but these deals will not be made official until the new league year begins. One of the first moves that was made involved wide receiver Alec Pierce. He was set to be a free agent, but the wide receiver was able to strike a deal to go back to the Indianapolis Colts.

Pierce signing back with the Colts was not something that was expected. Many thought he would leave in free agency, but he is back in Indianapolis. This made veteran wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. available, and the Steelers acquired him via trade on Monday.

The exact specifics of the trade have not yet been reported, but it seems like the exchange included a late-round pick swap. Pittman brings in a ton of experience to Pittsburgh, and he is another great weapon to have in Pittsburgh for the Steelers offense.

Colts' Michael Pittman Jr. runs with the football during a road game against the Houston Texans in 2025.
Pittman is preparing to enter his seventh season in the league, and he has been very productive even though he has not yet made a Pro-Bowl. He has recorded over 5,000 receiving yards throughout his time in the league while hauling in 25 touchdowns. He has been productive and underrated throughout his entire career, and he has also been a great leader. He was one of the captains of the Colts over the last several seasons, and he brings a ton of wisdom and character with him to Pittsburgh.
The veteran wide receiver is known for his route running and reliable hands, and that is exactly what Pittsburgh has needed. He should open up the field for the passing game, and he also is willing to contribute as a blocker in the running game. This trade should pay off for Pittsburgh, and the wide receiver signed a new, three-year extension with the franchise after being dealt.

Steelers Trade Is Beneficial For More Than One Reason
This trade is amazing for the Steelers for more than one reason. Firstly, the organization brings in a great and reliable player at a position of need. The Steelers were weak at the wide receiver spot, and the franchise managed to address that. The trade also keeps the organization away from messing up its compensatory pick formula. The league gives away compensatory picks to teams that lose free agents while not replacing them with players of the same value. Trading for a player does not factor into that equation. Essentially, if Kenneth Gainwell, James Pierre, and Isaac Seumalo sign some high value deals elsewhere, Pittsburgh can still be awarded additional selections in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Making a deal for Pittman was a smart decision, especially since the franchise didn't give up too much when it comes to draft capital. A late-round swap is completely reasonable, and the veteran wide receiver is now locked up in Pittsburgh contractually for the next four seasons.

In addition to this being a smart for on the field and off the field reasons, it seems like Pittman is happy to land with the Steelers.
What do you think about Pittsburgh's new addition? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
