The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to have just been gifted a perfect solution on a silver platter by the Green Bay Packers’ latest move. On Monday, as the legal tampering period got underway, teams across the league were closely analyzing roster constructions to see if there were any opportunities to improve their own squads. The Packers’ Head Coach, Matt LaFleur, clearly felt that offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins was expendable and saw a chance to free up $19.5 million in cap space if they cut ties with him.

Elgton Jenkins (74) of the Green Bay Packers walks off of the field after an NFL football game against the Washington Commanders at Lambeau Field on September 11, 2025 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

This development now gives the Steelers a real shot at acquiring Jenkins if they choose to pursue him. With one of the league’s top offensive linemen potentially available, Pittsburgh could strengthen their offensive front significantly, addressing a possible need. It seems as if Steelers left guard Isaac Seumalo could be walking in free agency and replacing him with Jenkins would be ideal. Jenkins’ versatility and experience at both the guard and tackle positions would make him an immediate impact player for the Steelers. He is also a two-time Pro Bowl center, which makes him even more attractive to the Steelers because of his versatility.

The best part for Pittsburgh is that acquiring Jenkins would not require any compensatory picks, making the move simpler and more cost-effective. If the Steelers act quickly, they could land a proven Pro Bowl talent without giving up valuable draft capital, potentially transforming their offensive line almost overnight. With the Packers’ decision, the opportunity for Steelers General Manager Omar Khan and new head coach Mike McCarthy, could not be clearer.

It’s been well documented just how pivotal Khan and the Steelers’ brass are when it comes to navigating the compensatory pick system. Typically, when a team loses a free agent and immediately replaces them, they forfeit the chance at a compensatory pick the following year. In this case, however, the Steelers have a rare opportunity: acquiring Jenkins would come with no compensatory pick consequences.

For Pittsburgh, that makes the move a clear win-win scenario, combining immediate roster improvement with long-term draft flexibility. Jenkins’ proven versatility and experience make him an ideal candidate to bolster an offensive line that has been searching for stability.

Under the direction of offensive line coach James Campen, the Steelers have steadily worked to refine their blocking schemes, and adding a player of Jenkins’ caliber could elevate the group to an elite level. With his ability to play multiple positions at a high level, Jenkins would offer both protection and flexibility, giving quarterback Aaron Rodgers, or whoever plays QB for Pittsburgh, the best chance to succeed and potentially improving the running game substantially. For a team that values calculated, strategic roster moves, this opportunity fits perfectly with the Steelers’ methodical approach.

As the legal tampering period progresses, Jenkins’ name is now one of the most intriguing on the market. If Pittsburgh moves quickly and decisively, they could add a player who not only fills a critical need but does so without the typical draft pick cost. In today’s NFL, where roster construction and salary-cap maneuvering can determine the difference between playoff contention and mediocrity, the Steelers appear to have been handed a rare advantage. Now Steelers fans will watch and wait to see if Khan and McCarthy make the move to get Jenkins.
