The Pittsburgh Steelers have been very mediocre this past decade. The franchise has had more success than a lot of other teams as it has made the postseason in five of the last six seasons, but there have been zero playoff wins during that time frame. The Steelers have actually been pretty much blown out in all of their postseason games since 2017, and the group has not been competitive in the slightest when it comes to the playoffs. The lack of recent postseason success was probably a part of what led former head coach Mike Tomlin to step down from his role, and the Steelers then went out and brought in Mike McCarthy as his replacement.

Tomlin coached the Steelers for 19 seasons, and naturally over that time, he became more powerful as a head coach within the organization. He had more say than probably any other head coach around the league, and that is something that could hinder the performance of somebody like General Manager Omar Khan. Stephen A. Smith spoke about this during an appearance on First Take on Tuesday morning.
"I had somebody out of Pittsburgh just tell me this morning, just texted me this morning, and I ain't saying their name because I don't have their permission to do so," Smith said. "But they said to me, 'Keep your eyes on Omar Khan.' They knew I got on him a few weeks ago. They said, 'With Tomlin gone, he now gets to make some decisions.' I was under the impression that he was making the decisions. They were like, 'Nah. Nah. Now we get to see what he is going to do.'"
Smith is a Pittsburgh fan, but he is a part of the national media who mostly supported Tomlin throughout everything, regardless of what was happening on the football field. It should have been obvious to a man that is so enthralled in the sports world that Tomlin was the shot-caller in Pittsburgh towards the end of his career, but he decided to shift all the blame to everyone around Tomlin within the organization, and that started with Khan.

Smith went on a rant about Khan not that long ago, and it seems that once he received the news that Khan was not always making the decisions in Pittsburgh, he took a lot of what he said back. Tomlin brought in the guys that he wanted, and he seemingly made the majority of the decisions when it came to the personnel. Smith seemed to give Khan some slack, but he did have a message for the general manager.
"My response to him was, 'Fine. But one of them better be a d*mn quarterback,'" Smith said. "Until I see a quarterback in Pittsburgh, I'm not believing in a d*mn thing they're selling. Nothing. You're gonna sell, sell, sell. I'm telling everyone in Steeler Nation and beyond, don't buy a d*mn thing they're saying until they show you they have a quarterback that you can look towards the future with."
Smith wants to see Khan find a legitimate solution at quarterback, and it sounds like he wants to see a franchise quarterback in the near future. Those don't just appear out of nowhere, and there doesn't seem to any potential franchise quarterbacks on the market or within range of the Steelers in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Steelers' Omar Khan Has Turned Heads With Recent Decisions
Khan began the legal tampering window of the offseason with a bang as he acquired Michael Pittman Jr. via trade, and he also extended the wide receiver. He also went out and signed Asante Samuel Jr., Jamel Dean, and Rico Dowdle. Every move has addressed a position of need for Pittsburgh, and none of the signings are bringing in a player who is obviously past their prime.
