The Pittsburgh Steelers have already gone through a ton of changes since the end of the 2025 season. The first major change was former head coach Mike Tomlin deciding to step down from his role. Many fans thought the organization would follow the same trend it has in the past and go out and hire a young, defensive-minded coach. That wasn't the case as the franchise brought in Mike McCarthy, and he is certainly an offensive-minded leader. He has already announced that he will be calling the plays during games, so it will be interesting to see how that goes in 2026.

Pittsburgh underwent what was essentially an entire overhaul of the coaching staff as McCarthy only kept a handful of coaches around from the 2025 staff. The new head coach has certainly brought his offensive-focused philosophy to Pittsburgh as the organization has already made some moves on that side of the ball. Pittsburgh signed running back Rico Dowdle, but the organization also completed a trade with the Indianapolis Colts to acquire and extend wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

Beat writer Mike DeFabo broke down the move in a recent article for The Athletic, specifically discussing how Pittman fits in with McCarthy's offense.

"Stylistically, Pittman also fits the West Coast offense that Mike McCarthy runs and [Aaron] Rodgers has thrived in," DeFabo wrote. "Pittman ran the 10th-most hitch routes in the NFL last year, according to TruMedia, a staple route in the [West Coast Offense]. He’s also been productive with a high volume of crossing routes, digs and other in-breaking routes that target the parts of the field where Rodgers would want to throw."

McCarthy runs a West Coast offense, and that is what he will be bringing to Pittsburgh. Any quick synopsis of this style of play will say that the passing game is focused on quick and efficient passes that have a high percentage of being completed. This type of passing game could be thought to be a supplement for the running game, similar to how the Steelers operated on offense in 2021 during Ben Roethlisberger's final season.

A primary goal of this style of offense is to use quick, efficient passes and the running game to bring the defense forward, while then trying to stretch the field vertically. Pittman is perfect for the intermediate and short passing game, while DK Metcalf will be able to stretch the field when needed. Pittman has had a ton of success on route concepts that are featured in the West Coast offensive scheme, and he has also had success over the middle, which is an area the Steelers have had some trouble.

This may not be the splashy trade or signing that fans wanted to see at wide receiver, but that could be a good thing. It could mean this was the right move. It wasn't some unnecessarily large move made in an attempt to sell tickets and merchandise. It was a move made because it makes the team better.

Steelers' Michael Pittman Jr. Will Also Be Great For Aaron Rodgers

A big story surrounding the Steelers for the second offseason in a row is the quarterback situation, and whether or not the team will be signing Aaron Rodgers. He played well in 2025, and the team has said it would be open to him returning. Pittman is the type of wide receiver that Rodgers would like. He has reliable hands, is gritty, and run blocks.

He also is great at intermediate routes, including crossers and digs as mentioned, which Rodgers loves to throw. As of right now, it is hard to tell what will happen between Rodgers and Pittsburgh, but a reunion is still on the table.

What do you think of this pairing of Pittman and McCarthy? Let me know on X, @brogannoey!
