The Pittsburgh Steelers have been extremely active in free agency as General Manager Omar Khan has looked to fill every hole that they have before the draft rolls around. This is so he can use his picks based off of best player available as opposed to need. He is not expected to be finished either, as he has 12 selections to play with. Pittsburgh is not anticipated to use all 12, which means there could be some sort of trade to bring in another starting-caliber player to make the lineup even stronger.

In his article on X, Mark Kaboly wrote about how a couple of those moves resulted in an area being a strength, although one signing highlights it more than the other.
"Don’t look now, but the Steelers’ defensive line is not only talented but deep with the signing of free agent Sebastian Joseph-Day," Kaboly said. "Joseph-Day was one of the bright spots on the Titans a year ago with 41 tackles and a pair of sacks. He’s one of those high-motor/effort defensive linemen. With Cam Heyward, Derrick Harmon, Keeanu Benton, Yahya Black, Esezi Otomewo, and Logan Lee, the line has clear starters and what should be solid starters rotating in."
Over the last few years, the Steelers' defensive line has been very top-heavy. The starters were between solid and great depending on the year, but there was never much behind them. That seems to have completely changed with the development of many young guys, bringing back Esezi Otomewo, and most importantly, the addition of Sebastian Joseph-Day in the interior part of the line.

With the need of depth at defensive line, Joseph-Day seemed like the perfect fit for the Steelers for a little while, and they apparently agreed when they decided to sign him to a two-year deal. During his seven-year NFL career, he has played all over the defensive line, plugging up whichever hole his team needed him to. Pittsburgh desperately needed a run-stopper like him in recent years.
Joseph-Day's versatility works great with him being a depth piece for the Steelers. They will most likely use him in constant rotation with the starters, subbing each one out at different times so he can come in on 1st and 10 and give them a breather on a drive. If any of them get injured, Pittsburgh can just plug-and-play the veteran defensive lineman and get solid production no matter where he is on the front four.
In all but two seasons, Joseph Day racked up over 40 tackles. 2025 was one of his better seasons with six tackles for loss to go along with six quarterback hits. He's not much of a big-play guy, but he is very good at solidifying the line and keeping offensive splash plays to a minimum. That is exactly what the Steelers have been missing for many years now, as the reliance on takeaways and sacks has bit them hard.
Steelers Have Other Great Depth Pieces On The Defensive Line
In limited reps, Yahya Black has shown growth in his rookie season. Like Joseph-Day, the Steelers had him as a plug-and-play depth piece. He was seen as the primary backup at left defensive end, but he did a good job of playing whichever position was needed of him at defensive line. He even had a pair of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery while playing just 416 defensive snaps on the season.

The Steelers are also expected to draft another defensive lineman in the 2026 NFL Draft, Joseph-Day and Cameron Heyward are veterans that are not expected to be around much longer. Keeanu Benton is also a pending free agent, and if he doesn't take that next step forward, he could walk in free agency. The depth of the defensive line may be the best it's been since 2019.
What do you think about Joseph-Day helping to turn a recent weakness into a massive strength? Let us know in the comments or on X at @Steelers_ChrisB.
