The Pittsburgh Steelers running game hasn’t lived up to expectations for a few seasons now. The team has been searching for ways to fix it, and in the 2025 season, they were fortunate with the emergence of running back Kenneth Gainwell. Gainwell’s dynamic play provided the Steelers with a spark they had been missing for several years. He showed the ability to both run between the tackles and make defenders miss in the open field, quickly becoming a key contributor. Although Gainwell ultimately left in free agency, he had been the team’s MVP just a year prior, leaving a significant hole in Pittsburgh’s backfield.

To address that gap, the Steelers opted to bring in running back Rico Dowdle, signing him to a two-year deal worth $12.25 million. Dowdle’s addition not only provides talent but also reunites him with his former head coach Mike McCarthy, with whom he had success during their time together with the Dallas Cowboys. Dowdle’s 2025 season with the Carolina Panthers further demonstrated his ability to produce at a high level. His combination of physicality, vision, and versatility makes him a perfect fit for Pittsburgh’s plans to reestablish a dominant ground game.

Speaking to members of the Pittsburgh media, Dowdle emphasized the physical style he plans to bring to the Steelers. His comments suggest that he intends to impose his will on defenders while creating opportunities for his teammates, a mindset that fits the traditional Steelers identity.

"I wouldn’t necessarily say I run angry, but I just think I run physical and try to impose my will on the defense," Dowdle said. "I know it’s hard for them to tackle me all four quarters, but I just try to wear 'em down and things like that. I will say since I was little, you see somebody get truck-sticked and you run 'em over. I have always just had that mindset to run through a guy ever since I was little."

The thought of Dowdle pairing with Jaylen Warren in the backfield excites fans and analysts alike. Both players complement one another, with Dowdle providing a downhill, punishing style and Warren adding speed and agility.

Together, they could form one of the league’s most difficult tandems to stop. Dowdle spoke about the duo and their potential.

"Me and Jaylen, I think we are pretty similar," Dowdle said while speaking with the Pittsburgh media. "Those north and south vertical guys, but just in general, getting with a new team and a new organization and meeting new people, new coaching staff. But I know my running back coach, I was with him in Dallas, and Coach McCarthy. Everybody else is just new faces, new places, new city. I am excited about it all and just looking forward to it."

With Dowdle now in Pittsburgh, there is renewed optimism surrounding the Steelers running game. Fans are hopeful that his presence, combined with Warren’s versatility, will finally give the team the kind of backfield consistency and physicality that has been missing in recent seasons. The coming season could mark a turning point for the Steelers ground attack, and Dowdle is poised to be at the center of it.

Steelers Have Strong Running Back Room Heading Into 2026 Season

With Dowdle, Warren, and second-year running back Kaleb Johnson, the Steelers running back room should be in good hands. Of course, the Steelers want to see more out of Johnson. They drafted him in the third round with hopes he would turn into a productive running back.

It didn’t happen as a rookie, but he still has time to develop. For now, Dowdle and Warren will be running the show, and there is optimism brewing about this being a physical running attack.
